stock tach not working. help please?

Well my tach used to go on and off. sometimes it would work, sometimes it wouldn't. I changed my ignition coil and it worked perfect for awhile but now it seems to not be working at all, not even occasionally. so what could be the problem with this? i know its not the gauge. i tried a new one and it acted the same. maybe I have a loose connection somewhere? im not sure. if you think you can help, just give it a shot. thanks!

When you changed out the coil, you probably disconnected the wire for the tach. If it worked after you changed out the coil for a while, I would suspect that connection.

when i changed it is when it started working. and now it just stopped out of no where. I tried taking it out and putting it back in today to see if that would make it work. It did not. could i get a volt meter and check to see if the connector gives a reading?

My tach was reading wrong so I put 200k ohm resistors in and wah la it worked perfect today. Hope this helps, mine is factory tach.I found the info for resistors under tachometer search.

Your best bet would be to check the wire, and replace it. That's probably the simplest and cheapest thing to do first. I know my tach reads about 4000 rpms when idling, and goes way up as far as it will go when I barely give it some gas.

Thats what i was thinking to but its going to be such a pain in the ***.

as for your problem, Its the gauge itself with the problem. they need a resistor on there. you have to solder it on yourself. there a ton of threads about it and I think there might be a page about it in the tech articles section.
