Question about getting my car in time...
I know that this question has been asked a thousand times but I could not find what I was looking for since there are so many posts and if I did find something it may not work with me car. So here is my question. I just replaced my lower intake and we all know that the distributor has to come out. I have taken distributors out at work with not problems but with the cars of today I have not had to do this for a year or so now. All the cars I see now are coil on plug. Well anyway with trying to watch the children and all I forgot to look for my main mark and now I cannot get the car to start.
Now I know that the car has to be brought up on top dead center and the rotor button has to be point toward no# 1. But a buddy that was here helping me told me that I did not have to pull it up on TDC on the compression stroke. We got the car on top dead according to the timing marks on the block. But it was not the compression stroke. The Chevy I did I had to bring it up to TDC and this was a 350 in a van.
I have looked all over Mitchell’s on demand and I cannot find crap referring to this. I cannot even find the firing order. I also cannot find this black and tan wire that I did find out about for the timing by-pass for the ECM. Which does this wire really need to be unplugged? I would figure as long as I can get the car in time and running right I should be able to disconnect the battery and reset everything.
This is referring to a 1986 Firebird Trans Am with a 305 TPI engine and the engine code if F.

I am not a pontiac guy . Every motor I have ever put a dizzy in I have put on compression stroke once in you can make any wire you want no. one.You might call a dealer for firing order or wait until pontiac person reads your post. On my camaro wire is on passenger side by firewall and need to unplug it to set initial timing

EST connector looks like this; somewhere on the pass side firewall in F-Bodies apparently.

You set base timing to 6 degree on the balancer; TDC on #1 on the COMPRESSION stroke.
That will be good enough to get the engine running, you can tweak the dist a little to keep it running until it warms up.
When warm, you then disconnect the ESC connector ( idle will drop down which is why you what it warmed up ) , and reset timing using a timing light.
Don't forget to reconnect the connector when finished

On my car, the EST connector breaks out of the wiring harness just above the blower motor housing.
Re: Question about getting my car in time...
Thanks for the replys. I replaced the plugs tonight and I have to get wires. I was trying to get the car TDC on the compression stroke but I could not see the numbers on the timing plate so I got to find some paint. And thanks for the information about where the wire was. I saw the wire on the blower motor but I thought that was for something else...
