Re: IS MY CAM TOO BIG

Would be nice to know all the cam specs at least.

A wild guess..... if it's a flat tappet stype cam (almost certainly is if it's the original 84 motor) then someting with .502 lift would likely be too big. Not only are stock heads and springs not designed to handle any more than about .470" but also that much lift would usually indicate duration somewhere north of 230* @ .050. In short, a lumpy bastard in a near-stock little 305.

Re: IS MY CAM TOO BIG

If you havn't broke anything yet it must not be to big. I don't know much but what I can tell you for sure is that idle would probably be around 1000, you can kiss an auto tranny goodbye unless you have a huge stall. Besides that, just set timing at around 18* total advance at idle and I think you should be able to start.

No matter what with a cam that big it will smell rich. If your eyes/nose is running and it's hard to breathe, then you're way to rich. You can count on not driving that car again if you don't want to smell like you took a shower with gasoline.

Re: IS MY CAM TOO BIG

I don't know what he's referring to with the 502 number. I don't even know if he's referring to valve lift which would be written as .502". Rocker ratio factors into this, too.

So without knowing, at least, the duration and LSA specs I don't have a clue. I could guess, but anybody can do that. It's all about the numbers; the more the better.

Re: IS MY CAM TOO BIG

Yeah sounds like its flat tappet being an 84, but if it was a roller cam and was made by comp cams, the 502 refers to the part number which means 218/224 duration .502 lift on intake or close to it, i cant remember off hand. Its a nice cam for a carbed 305 i think with full supporting mods.

Re: IS MY CAM TOO BIG

i would check the dynamic compression with a compression gauge. if that cam is .502" lift, its likely making the compression too low to completely burn the fuel. plus you may have coil bind and other things that may have caused engine damage.

Re: IS MY CAM TOO BIG

the closest flat tappet is the magnum 292, it checks in at 244* of duration at .050. and it sounds big in a 434.

See what I mean? It's all about the numbers and he's got to post some.
