Completely baffled by this.....
Completely baffled by this.....
Hello.....I have a 1989 RS Camaro with a TBI 305. A problem has been occurring which I cannot figure out. This is what happens: When the car is totally cold, it starts with no problems.......however, when warm, after being shut off for approximately 10-15 minutes, as soon as I attempt to start the car, the gas gauge shoots way past the "F" and the car will not start. In the past, disconnecting the injectors, flooring the gas pedal and turning the key would clear the flooding, the gas gauge would settle back to normal, and the car would start, when injectors were reconnected. This no longer works. Now, I must wait for the car to become cold again, the gas gauge remains past the F, until driven for a bit, then settles again to normal, and the car runs well, until, I shut it back off.....then the whole thing repeats. The coolant temp sensor has been replaced, but it made no difference. The clue-in that this is about to happen is always the gas gauge spiking up. I need to know what this is, as it is driving me crazy.

Could be vapor lock? Do you have a vented gas cap? I am no expert but just throwing out ideas.

What's your fuel pressure when it happens? Is the pump running?
Re: Completely baffled by this.....
Pump is running, fuel pressure is normal and good. It seems the only really consistent thing is the gauge spiking up, followed by the not starting. If I wait an hour for the car to cool, it will start......

Re: Completely baffled by this.....
Still could be a bad fuel pump....very common that pumps go bad. I had similar problem....would act like it 'vapor locked'....changed to good brand pump...problem fixed. I would suspect volume, not pressure problem.
Also there is a gas tank vent valve near front of gas tank on driver's side that gets pluged up....replace or clean that out good, will help with the venting of the tank.
Also, is it flooding motor??? That could a problem with maybe some stuck open injectors or driver problem. Might check into that too. Stock multi-tec injectors are not known for reliability.
