Only problem I've had is with FelPro blue gaskets. If this is what you're using get a pair of old style black gaskets.

i always use blue RTV on both sides of the water pump gaskets.. clean the surface up real nice, wipe down with a brake-clean sprayed towel, and install with rtv-applied gaskets... get the pump bolted up, and torqued down... Then let it sit overnight so the RTV can cure. after that, go ahead and fill the system... Never had a problem doing it this way... You can get everything put back together, just wait to fill it up until the morning..

If you have been using permatex or some other sealant on them, don't.

Just use a blue fel-pro gasket, I've never had a problem with them.

To make installation easier, go to the hardware store and get some 3/8-16 x 3" studs to use in place of the water pump bolts.

Dont use atv silicone on water pumps. Its slick, moves around, blows out easier under higher rpm, elevated psi and temps.
either dry paper gasket or i have been using a touch of thread paste pipe sealant and have had great results..
thats what GM uses on the LS oil pan gaskets where they intersect..

Re: Blew my water pump gasket yesterday....

Was the car fully warmed up when it blew? I blew out the rear plate gasket twice when I didn't let the car fully warm up and I'm guessing the thermostat wasn't open yet. Friend of mine kept blowing out gaskets, finally put a straight edge across the two mating surfaces and found it wasn't flat across.
