White smoke

I just bought another thirdgen, this one is a 1982 camaro 305 HO 4brl. I got it started and let it ran for 15 mins that day, then next 3 days came by and I was hoping the white smoke was just oil or water in engine because it was sittign for 6 years. I havn't put any gas in the car guessing the gas is still 5 years old. It will puff white smoke out then disappear fast when at idle but when you give it gas maybe at 3,000 rpm it will make a cloud of white smoke. I was guessing head gasket or cracked head. I oil was complete black, so I change the oil it looked 100% pure oil, after the oil change it still made the white smoke and there isn't any green in the oil. I then let the car sit over night and open the radiator cap, and it still had alot of pressure, so would what do you think it is?

Re: White smoke

It sounds like your motor is burning oil. Pull some plugs and take a look.

Re: White smoke

Yeah, that what I think the guy said when he he drove it from Oregon to Washington it burned one quart of oil, but he just said it was because it was driven in such a long time. If its the ring on the piston anyone know how much that cost? I also have to fix the reverse in 4 speed manual transmission.

Re: White smoke

um check your oil level run that gas through and put some fresh in and then change the fuel filters buddy just to prevent future problems xD as for rings it your gunna take it apart to replace rings first get your valve job and get new valve seals and stuff and see if the smoking stops before you jump into the rings. If you dont mind me asking though how many miles are on the motor/car?

Re: White smoke

Speedometer says 54K, the lady who owned in Oregon had receipts from ties changes and oil chanhes that said XXX,XXX miles, i also check the car fax and nothing, so I'm guessing 50k? I'll change them out and see, maybe I'll take a video of the whole car so people can see.

Re: White smoke

White smoke is related to water/coolant.

Blue = oil

Black = too rich/not enough spark.

With that said, keep track of your coolant level. If it sat for 6 years, I would say it could be an intake gasket or possibly a blown head gasket. Start the car and remove the radiator cap. Look inside the radiator and see if the coolant is bubbling more than it would normally. Let us know what you find.

Why did it sit for 6 years? Blown head gasket? Some other problem?

You might want to try and re-torque the head bolts and intake manifold bolts and see if it helps. Worth a try.

Re: White smoke

white smoke= blown head gasket or intake leak sucking water or cracked head or block, or just water in oil from sitting, do a leak down test and compression test to see where its leaking.

Re: White smoke

Even after all the heads I've torqued down over the years I've never tried to memorize the sequence. My thinking is it's too easy to make a mistake. So each time I tackle that chore I sit the manual in the lifter valley with the page having the sequence open.

That's the best advice I can give you on that. If you don't have a manual, you should buy one. It'll come in handy over and over.

Re: White smoke

The oil is once black again, there is no milky look in it at all, the radiator is completely full and still had alot of pressure after 3 days. The exhaust smells like fuel, there is wet spots on the ground from giving it gas. I was trying to tune the carb and it look like the smoke was going away. I'm guessing its fuel mixture. What do u guys think? I can't tell if the oil level drop any, the smoke was like a dark white or blue, I guess.

Re: White smoke

I still would suspect valve guide seals, common to go bad, especially after sitting....sometimes hard to tell if white or blue smoke. coolant leak internal would not always get into the oil, and usually will drain you radiator. So if its still at same level it might be an oil problem.

Re: White smoke

If it the piston rings, head gasket, or w/e it is. I was just going to get it fixed but found out it would cost around 1000 or so....so a full rebuild kit about 350 then some tools be about the same 1000, I'll just rebuild the engine in my little shed outside. I also found a good link for a dvd "boxwrench dvd" I'll use that and a little knowledge and get her done.

Here the link if anyone esle wants to download total of 6.3 GB or something 210 minute long dvd.

Re: White smoke

Im thinkin i have the same problem with my 83 z. I only paid 300 for my car though, haha its been sitting in a garage for 15 years. Well i finally got it to start the other day and theres grey/bluish smoke coming out of what appears to be the exhaust manifolds. I just put in valve cover gaskets so it can be coming outta those. I cant really figure out whats wrong

What have you done after it sat for 6 years?
Did you clean the fuel tank and system and so on?
Did you give it a tune-up?
What have you done?

Re: White smoke

Pull your plugs and post the result of what they looked like. I have had one plug become so fouled that it would not fire. Thus, sending raw fuel down the exhaust pipe creating a fuel smelling white smoke.

Read those plugs......all of them. Let us know.
