how to make more power from a 305

ok so my 87 iroc has a early 80s 305 in it but has a rod knock. My buddy gave me a 305 from a 91 caprice with the center bolt valve covers, it only has 65,000 on it so im going to use it for now until i finish building my 350 motor which wont be done till next winter. So i just wanna know a few mods to get some hp from it besides headers. It has 3inch exhaust on it with a flowmaster. Its going to be a carb motor, 650cfm holley with an edelbrock performer intake manifold. Anything else i can do with out doing a cam and touching the bottem end.

I'm not sure if that uses a roller cam or a flat tappet cam, but i'd highly re-think your choice of not touching the cam. It's so painfully tame in the caprice that you can't help but improve it. $200-$300 or so, and the difference is massive.

A 100 shot. Seriously.
My daughter's 86 LG4 with TPI exhaust and 3.73 rear has gone 13.1's with a 90 shot. Looking for 12's next time out with the S-10 converter.

In the case of the 86 LG4, the stock torque converter has about a 1400 rpm stall rating, which, in very simplistic terms, means that until the car starts to move, the engine is held to 1400 rpm. Naturally, this is far below both the torque and horsepower peaks of the engine, and acceleration off the line is very limited. The factory-installed converter in the S-10 pickups has a stall rating in the 2000-2200 range and is a big improvement in letting the engine snap to near its peak torque rpm, getting the car off the line more quickly, resulting in improved 60-foot times and ET's. This of course assumes you have adequate traction/tires/track prep. Then there is a further benefit with each gear change, as the engine doesn't fall as far below its power peak after each shift.
I'm guessing the TC change will result in a 60' improvement on this car of .05 to .10 sec, which translates into a .1 to .2 second improvement in ET.

Yes, the S-10 converter is barely noticeable in part-throttle daily driving.
And most people even consider stall speeds in the 3000-3600 rpm range acceptable in daily driven light vehicles like 3rd Gens.

This, 305s were efficiency motors from the factory. They're almost all cammed like diesel engines. A LT1 cam will wake it up massively (if it's a roller engine).
