Oil pump gasket?

When I built my motor with my dad, he swore that there wasnt a gasket that went between the oil pump, and where it bolted it to. I was browsing summit, and saw that there was actually supposed to be a gasket there. My motor now doesnt have a gasket there, and I am swapping it into my camaro very soon. What can happen as a result of not having a gasket there?

Thanks!

Re: Oil pump gasket?

Now that I look for this gasket on autozone.com, I cant find it, they dont sell one. Could this be an ''optional'' part?

Here it is on summit:

Thats a relief. Had me all worried, I did not want to drain the oil, drop the pan, etc...

Thanks.

Re: Oil pump gasket?

GM as rolled out close to a hundred million small blocks so far. Pretty sure not one of them had an oil pump gasket when it left the factory.

Re: Oil pump gasket?

I had never seen an oil pump gasket for an SBC until I saw that one in the Summit catalog a while back.

You're fine without it, as is everyone else that builds an SBC.
