Just guessing without a picture i believe its a temp sensor. It should have a wire going to it. But then again.. Its broken. Is there a loose wire somewhere? does your temp guage work on the dash?

Re: what is this sensor

sorry i guess i should have been more specific. The engine is out of the car and I am rebuilding a Vortec 350 to go back in. it did have a wire hooked to it (don't know what it looked like to be honest though). It is broken and the only think left to the sensor is the hex head so a picture really wouldn't help. I do have a sensor on the intake at the thermostat housing and I thought that was the temp gauge sensor. Anyway if anyone knows which sensor goes in this spot and what the part number or at least what its called I would appreciate it

Hello 89RSTBI!!

Usually that would be a temp sensor for the cooling fan, and not for the temp gauge/dash light, as that's on the other side between #1, and #3 spark plug holes!!

Check your repair manual again!!!

Re: what is this sensor

yes I have the one from the other side (same side the oil pressure sensor is on, drivers side) this one is on the passenger side and cooling fan sensor makes sense. I was looking for x2 sensor in the manual and only think close to that was the oxygen sensor thats in the manifold but thats not what this sensor is. I will look for fan sensor

Hello Grumbles!!

Try the GM dealer, Autozone, NAPA etc!!

The sensor "should" still be used on GM stuff, and should be available from them!!

Comes in different temps for other applications, of course, they would have different part numbers!!

Re: what is this sensor

ok on my 91 tpi that sensor is a coolant fan switch. It turns on the secondary fan. There is a coolant temp sensor on the front of my block by the thermostat housing and on the drivers side of the block there lies the temp gauge sensor, between the one and three cylinder. Do you have a dual fan setup? If you do then, Why dont you just take that existing wire that went to that sensor and wire it to a switch inside your car, so you can turn on that fan any time you want. I wired mine to the foglight switch on my dash.LOL

Re: what is this sensor

think I would rather spend the 19 bucks or 40 bucks for one that turns it on faster. I would never hot wire a fan because what if someone else was driving the car and they didn't turn on the switch? bye bye engine. I just don't think that is a good alternative

I was referring to wiring the secondary fan to a switch, not the main fan.LOL
