Throttle sticks open
Hi guys, this is my first post here!
I've just got hold of an '87 Camaro IROC-Z, 305, 5-speed manual.
They're quite rare here in Ireland!
I will probably be back with many questions, but here's the first:
The throttle seems to stick open, especially when changing down. i.e. when declutching the revs stay up at 2500 - 3000 rpm. A blip of the pedal makes it drop down to tickover.
I can't make it happen when stationary, so its not possible to see if the linkage is sticking, but it seems to be free enough.
Any ideas please?
Thanks!
Andy

Re: Throttle sticks open
check your floor mats i know it sounds stupid but they can get bunched up under the pedal, you can also hit the linkage with carb cleaner then some wd-40 after wards . Good Luck

Re: Throttle sticks open
Disconnect accelerator cable from TB and check to see if there is any forward / back movement where the shaft enters the TB.
A broken / kinked /damaged accelerator cable can have the same effect

When the throttle body is old , the holes the butterfly shafts run in wear out of round so when closing the butterflies can go off center and jam up in a open position. The tap on the pedal seats them closed.

Each butterfly had a screw that held it onto the shaft. I was able to loosen these screws then 'flap' the butterflies a few times so they settled more centrally, then tighten the screws.
I wonder cold this be done in the Camaro - how do I get to the butterflies to see?
I just got this car, have no manual yet.
Thanks!

Re: Throttle sticks open
the TB would have to come off to do that i believe , try shooting some WD-40 on the shaft and see if that frees that up a little .

Yea, I don't think its physically sticking though. I'll investigate the throttle spindle bearing thing.
I might take the TB off anyway to have a look!
Thanks for pointers guys..

Re: Throttle sticks open
Well, happy days.
I squirted some easy-start (the can I bought is actually called 'Start You Bastard!') and heard no change in revs.
Took off the Throttle Body, the spindle feels ok, no undue play, but a lot of black sticky gunge around the butterflies. Cleaned that away with brake cleaner (alcohol), reassembled, took the car for a run and all seems fine!
One thing though, what are the thin plastic pipes that run from the back of the engine to the TB, and via a T-piece to the cruise control department for? Gee they are brittle, mine broke in a couple of places when I was moving stuff around. I assume vacuum. Would it be a good idea to replace these for something less brittle?
