Emission problem

I have a 83 z28 that has a 305, problem is that the car always reaks of gas and most likely the problem is that someone took all of the emission control junk and ripped it out. I have a question to whether i save up to buy a new engine or if i buy emission control stuff. Also if i buy a new engine i am only 16 so i dont know much about cars yet so that would be a good learning process. Also how much of a budget would i need for a new engine?

Re: Emission problem

just replacing the engine isn't gonna solve the fuel vapor issue.

Re: Emission problem

if you have emissions tests, youll need the emissions stuff whether you build a new motor or not. unless you find an inspector willing to "take tips".

Re: Emission problem

the 83 is mechanical advance? or is it controlled by a computer... all you may need is a tune of your Carb and or timing...

Re: Emission problem

don't waste your time by putting air injection on unless you have to because of emission laws. do you have any codes set?

well if you don't have a computer on board, then you will have to take it to someone who can adjust your air/fuel mixture... if you do have a computer on board, then you will need to again have your carburetor adjusted and replace some sensors...

Re: Emission problem

Where is the smell coming from? Under the car, under the hood, or the tank area?
