Any one here ever port the 624 Iron Heads?

Hi I was wondering if anyone here had any luck with these. They have the reputation of being junk but Im just looking to do a budget mild build along with 1.6 roller rockers and possibly a cam. The TPI has already been professionally extrude honed. Thanks for any help.

If they aren't core shifted or already cracked, you might want to try it if you don't have anything else to do. Thee is so little extra iron that they may not even be able to clean up without punching through to water. You would probably be better off getting a used set of stock heads and reworking them, such as 14101128 aluminums if you can find them, or even the iron 64cc chambered 14011083 would probably be better.

Don't do much to the exhaust except polish. They are very thin. Good to practice on before you do a real head. Be careful because the grinder will jump when you grind through.

Agreed. No point, except as practice. If they aren't already cracked, then polish the chambers and exhaust ports, or write them off to practice. Worst SBC head ever, mostly due to cracking. The ports are basically the same as 882s, which virtually never crack. I've done those, and even with a full-on best effort, the results aren't worth it. The bench said 216 cfm intake, 159 cfm exhaust, even with high-dollar 2.02 / 1.60" valves, 75 degree bowl hogging, and so on.
