upgrading my engine
So I have a 305 in my 87 Camaro now. I found a 1970's 350 2 bolt main block and heads for sale locally for $200. What do you guys think? I've been reading around the net that 2 bolt 350's aren't worth building. I also don't know if $200 is a good deal or not. The block and heads have been professionally cleaned and prepared for a project the guy was going to do but he claims he chose to go in a different direction. Opinions?

Does it come with the rotating assembly?
See what the heads casting number is they may be boat anchors in waiting.

How much are you planing to build up the motor? A 2 bolt main, is fine if your staying under 500ish horsepower I believe. You can also upgrade the main bolts to hold up to 600 horsepower.

Re: upgrading my engine
I'm not really wanting too much horsepower. My Camaro is my daily driver so it has to remain streetable. I was aiming for 300-400hp. I'm more concerned with the price. Is a 2 bolt main 350 block and heads worth $200 CAD? Also, the guy told me that he is selling just the block and heads, no cam, no pistons etc.

Around here I can get a complete motor from the junkyard for $100.

Re: upgrading my engine
I paid 100 for my block alone, but it had already been to the machine shop, dipped, with new cam bearings, and bored out. What are the head casting #'s?

Re: upgrading my engine
Does the block need to be bored? Either way, i'd say $200 is fair. I'd leave the heads on buddy's doorstop, and use your 305 heads. Chances are good that they are better anyway.
You'll need to buy a crank, pistons, etc. You'll be in $1000 when the smoke clears or thereabouts.
Everyone talks about a 4 bolt, but for a car, a 2 bolt is just fine. I have a 2 bolt, lots of people do.

Re: upgrading my engine
I don't know what the head numbers are yet because I have been talking to the seller via email and he hasn't replied yet. I'm just wondering if going with a 2 bolt 350 is really worth it compared to building my 305. I'm in Victoria BC by the way.

Yes, a 2 bolt 350 is a 350. Consider it identical to a 4 bolt 350, the difference is so slim.
Don't bother building the 305 if you can get a 350 that cheap.
