Help: Claniness under the hood...
I have a fully stock 1984 Camaro Z28, automtic TH700R4, LG4 305 w/Q-jet 4 barrel cab.
I want to take everything off/out that I can, to clean up and make space in engin compartment. Eveything that I dont need can go including the air conditioner...lol
I have a new intake and holley carb I want to put on. I also have hooker headers I will be istalling in the near future. I already put my flowmaster exhuast on and hollwed out the cat.
Can anyone please tell me the best configuration and what to take off/out the engine. I prefer a clean look without any of the emission crap. I want straight engine brothers!!! And room. I hope somone can help me out with a picture or pictures so I can use as a guide. At least that would be a great help.
So in short I want pure engine. I want to get rid of any and everything I dont need.
Thanks guys for anything you can come up with

Re: Help: Claniness under the hood...
No idea where you are from, but you would be well advised to start 1st with your local and state laws concerning taking the emissions off if this is a street car!!!!! If you're going non computer, then the cleanest look would be to trash the whole flippin' wiring harness and start over with an aftermarket harness... Most will tell you not to bother, guess it depends on your definition of a clean engine bay.....IMO, it's well worth the time!
Before you start anything, define for yourself exactly what you want the car to be and to do.. You want a kewl kruizer, or a Super Gas car in street clothing??? Want all the wussy bells and whistles, or strictly go fast pieces??
As with anything else in life, Plan your work, Work your Plan!!!!\
Oh yeah, two rules in building a car you should remember;
1. It's going to take longer then you thought
2. It's going to cost more then you thought
And, the closest thing to intelligence from this geezer, "If you don't have the time and money to do it right, how are you going to find the time and money to do it over?"

Re: Help: Claniness under the hood...
Im in York PA. Far as I know its all visual for 1995 vehicles and older.
I'm not looking to spend a ton of money...yet...as the last camaro I had I dumped thousands into, the ex wife took it...bit(h...LOL
So what i'm looking at doing is simple, street legal, clean with increased horse power and aggressivness.
As I said I have a wieand/stealth ( I think thats how its spelled) intake, 600cfm (or maybe its a 650-700 LOL i dont know) holley carb w/electric choke kit, and hooker headers.
What I dont have is a down pipe to attach to factory exhaust. However I have already installed a flowmaster exhaust. Didnt turn out being as aggressive sounding as I would have hoped.
I have different people telling me I should stick with the Q-jet and junk the holley. Any thoughts on that?
Back to the brunt of it all. In essence I want a simple yet inexpensive plan to achieve what I want. Time is no issue.....but dont want it to be a drawn out project either. I do plan on driving her every day.

Re: Help: Claniness under the hood...
Nothing wrong with a Q Jet for a cruizer, long as it's overhauled and set up correctly. The small primaries and humongous secondaries do help with the mpg if you keep your leg out of it, and performance is great---when they're done right! Oh yeah, which Q Jet? If it's the computer controlled one, it probably wouldn't be a keeper for me! Are you going to switch to a 350??? Hope so. Takes as much to go through a 305 as it does a 350, but when done the difference in performance is like night and day in favor of the 350!

Re: Help: Claniness under the hood...
Nah...im gonna keep the 305 eventually turn it into a stroker engine. Of course thats waaaaaay down the line.
Dont know if the carb is computer controlled. It has an electric choke though. The Holley I got is manual but I got a electric choke kit however.
What would cause the car to idle rough as hell in gear...like at a stop? I gotta put it in nuetral to keep her from shutting off...sometimes.
Soon as you give her gas she is great, or in nuetral/park. I checked for vacuum leaks found none. Advanced the timeing a smidge and she idles better but no great improvment. cant get to the fuel air mixture screws to adjust all the factory **** is in the way!!!!!!
I have yet to change plugs and wires, and cap/rotor.
Friend told me it could be the EGR valve. But soon as I tear all the unneccessary crap out I wont need it.
Im lost to an extent.

Re: Help: Claniness under the hood...
If your going to replace the Quad with the Holley, you'll need an HEI dist that's not comp controlled, and you'll need the proper geometry corrector for the linkage that the TV cable attaches to.
Technically, it's not legal to remove the emissions stuff, so check with some local emissions shops first - the carb and intake count as well. Stay away from chains, check local joe blow shops that do emissions and just ask them if they will give you a safety inspection if the emissions junk is yanked out.
You can remove the A/C compressor, condensor (radiator looking thing in front of your radiator), and evap canister. You can swap over to the A/C delete heater box as well, they are about $125 on ebay and such.
You can remove the smog pump and the valve for it, and just put standard NPT threaded pipe plugs on the ends of the check valves on top of the manifolds until you get the headers on. There's a metal tube from the cat - I simply cut it off at the cat, pinched it closed, and sealed with with the old blow torch/coat hanger welding method.
Not sure how your brackets are - with removing the A/C part of that bracket I think helps hold the power steering pump in place - without the A/C bracket there, the P/S pump may not hold well - if you have to get a new p/s pump bracket, don't waste your time with anything but March = they are expensive, but the only one that I found will work - after wasting weeks and alot of money trying to not have to pay the $100 for the march bracket, I wound up getting it anyway. Sometimes it pays to just get the hi-dollar brand to begin with, and this is def true with the p/s bracket.
I'm assuming this new intake does not have the EGR on it, so that will go as well. The rest is simply rerouting wires and relooming them out of the way and to look noce.
There's a thread in the deatails/appearance section of underhood pics - tons of pics there to see for inspiration and ideas.

Re: Help: Claniness under the hood...
You said that "as far as I know its only visual for 95 and older". I would really check EXACTLY what they are going to be looking for before doing anything. I also would personally keep the AC. Finding fast cars with no AC is extremely easy. A fast car with AC makes it even that much more special. If its a track only car then no AC is fine. I did rip my AC out. However that is my next project. Putting AC back in the car. I'm not going with a factory setup, but I am going to put AC in it.
To get my engine compartment as simple as possible I litterally took everything out. I mean every last single part that attached with a nut or bolt I took out. I then just put back what I needed to make it drive. Here is what it looks like now. As I said, hopefully soon there will be AC. I'm going to be going with polished March brackets and a polished AC compressor. The AC and heater lines will be stainless braided. The AC box will be mounted under the dash. Ignore the tape measure. Its just the most recent pic I have.

Re: Help: Claniness under the hood...
Thank you. The thing on the frame is actually for power. The stud on my starter is kinda small so I didnt want the power wires going to the fuse panel hooking up to the starter. I also use to have a few extra things hooked up to it. Making that just made adding circuts easy to do. I am considering rewiring some stuff so that may be comming off in the not so distant future as I am trying to make everything as absolutley clean as possible under the hood. As far as vacuum for the brakes, the hose is in the picture, its just hard to see. If you look right under where my throttle cable comes out of the firewall you can see the hose.

Deffinatly an awsome build bro!
That look is exactly what I want under my hood. Pure engine. LOL And yeah I think I will stick with the AC, although I have T-tops and practicly take them off everyday, I guess I could chrome it out for looks, or black iodise, or even gunmetal metallic. Whatever the case I plan on doing some work real soon.
Guess I could take pics and post them eventually.

You should also take a look in the "post your carbed motor pics" sticky in the carb section. There are a lot of REAL nice looking engines in there.

I live in pa as well now i am closer to philly than york so rules may be a little different as they are all across the state but as long as you stay under 5000 miles a year just visual no sniffer if you go over 5000 miles then you'll have a sniffer test, but like i said york county may be different. The visual is easy to pass as long as you find a guy that will look the other way , and as said stay away from the chains there ball busters on that stuff.

If you decide to remove your emission equipment, exhaust manifolds, I would be interested in buying them. I have a 83 LG4 that i'm trying to restore back to original.
Thank's

You could also consider battery relocation and purge cannister delete to clean up the front end of the bay a bit, or at the very least fab some covers for them

By thye way "built91" I realy like your reconfiguration of your gage cluster. Personally I think it looks cleaner than factory.
Great job bro.
