Battery keeps dying overnight!

I bought this camaro a few weeks back and it drove home fine. The next morning when I tried starting the car the battery was dead. I charged it and it stayed charged for most of the day. Next day same problem, this time I turned the alarm off and it stayed charged longer. I don't think the alarm is the cause of the problem but it seemed like its helping drain it faster.

The second picture shows a wire I didn't know was about. It runs into the fuses so I'm guessing it's the alarm. bad wiring job though if you ask me.

Get a test light. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Make sure your doors are shut, alarms off, all that stuff. Now connect the test light between the negative battery cable and the negative terminal on the battery. If you have a drain, the light will light up. Now start pulling fuses out one by one. If you pull a fuse and the light stays the same, put the fuse back in. If you pull a fuse and the light goes out or dims a lot, your drain is in that circut. Find out what that fuse powers and start searching then.

Re: Battery keeps dying overnight!

Before you do what Built91Z28 says, I would first check the oil pressure switch and the domelight wiring. These are very common to cause a drain to kill your battery overnight.

Gunk in the cig lighter socket can do it also, a few years back there was a rash of car fires from that on the classic boards.

Thanks I'll try that tomorrow morning. This is the car by the way. I couldn't find the introduction section or anything like that.

Re: Battery keeps dying overnight!

you can also disconnect your battery overnight and see if your battery is dead or not in the morning, at least to rule out you just have a bad battery now.

Re: Battery keeps dying overnight!

Had the same problem on nearly the same engine just the other day. Did like they all say - put an ammeter across the neg terminal and start pulling fuses. My problem was in the accy circuit. Someone left the trunk light turned on. Killed the battery overnight. Good luck! you'll find it.
