whats wrong with my car?
whats wrong with my car?
i have a 1990 iroc z 305 tuneport that will sometimes crank and sometimes not. check engine light finally come on today and has a egr code. can a faulty egr valve keep a car from cranking? it runs like a top when the motor is cold but want hit a lick when its hot and sounds like its skipping very badly. ive put a new tps, icv, coolant temp sensor and a new coil. any help is greatly appreciated.

A egr valve won't cause your engine to not crank over. That could be caused by many things. Does the starter click when it won't turn over? Check all you connections especially grounds.

Your post is not clear. What's the difference between 'spinning' and 'cranking'?
Cranking is the term generally used to describe the act of the starter turning the engine before it fires and runs. If it does not crank, engine codes are meaningless.
If it cranks, but does not start and run, that's different.

First, check for spark. Its easiest and safest to use an in line spark tester. The tester light should flash brightly. If no or intermittent flash on spark tester, check for power at the coil using a test light. Should light up on both the pink and white wires with key on. Then test between batt+ and white wire while a helper cranks engine. Light should flash. If not then you have an issue with either your ignition module or pick up coil. The pick up coil is not to be confused with the ignition coil. Pick up coil is in distributor just under the rotor.
If spark is okay, check fuel pressure, should be 40 while cranking. If pressure okay, check injector pulse. Best to use a noid light. Light should flash brightly. Check one injector on each bank. Let us know what you find with these tests.
If these items are okay, you may have a MAP, TPS, CTS or ECM issue.

if you dont have a test light have a buddy come and turn the key and pull each spark plug wire one at a time put a spare plug in it and ground the plug to some bare metal, preferably away from any fuel leaks
should shoot a nice bright spark out, oh and make sure you hold the boot and not the plug itself
