car cuts out when hot, intermittent problem
Guys,
I am currently fighting a very intermittent problem.
About 3 weeks ago I was driving down the road at 40mph and all the sudden I lost all power in the engine. I put the accelerator to the floor and NOTHING happened. The motor was still running but just didn't respond to the gas pedal. I pulled over. About 5 seconds later it started running really rough and then it died. I waited about 5 minutes then restarted it. Everything seemed fine. I drove about 1 mile and the same thing happened. It did this about 4 times by the time I got home 4 miles away.
First thing I checked was fuel pressure. It seemed to be fine.
I replaced the ECM and the problem went away for 3 weeks of limited driving.
Then yesterday I was out doing a high performance track day at a local road course and about 50 miles into the event the problem came back. I let the car completely cool and attempted to drive it home. I made it about 30 miles before it died again. I ended up towing the car home.
Any ideas?
I'm thinking its ignition related. Maybe ignition coil, pickup coil, or distributor module?
Thanks.

I did some research on the ICM and it seems very likely this is the cause. I am thinking about externally mounting the ICM somewhere in the engine bay to help reduce heat soak like happens inside the distributor. I think this will improve reliability especially for road race sessions where heat buildup may be more extreme than on the street.
My question.
Does the ICM ground through distributor? Will I need to attach a ground wire to the external heat sink.
Thanks.

Yes, it grounds through the distributor body.
