i searched theese fourms forever...........could not find my specific prob so if this thread is multple sorry....


here is the deal....... 87 firebird formula 350 TPI no mods. runs real well so im not messin with it. when i start it hot or cold.........it dont matter how long it sits either. it cranks for three to seven seconds and when it starts it smokes like hell smells like gas big time and sounds like it has a big cam.....then fine......no smoke no miss. fuel pressure/ senors all in workin order. i just dont get it.

help a bow tie out would ya?

i herd there is a cold start valve on the intake runner? could this be it?

 

after a little research it could also be the maf whaddya think

 

So you are obviously rich which means you have fuel leaking in somewhere; either cold start injector as mentioned or leaking injectors

changed the valve....185 bucks dam same problem....what elce u got?

 

i agree with the idea that it might be the map sensor. should be on the top right of the intake as u are in front of the car... if that is acting up it will dump gas like crazy

 

also what about your timing. if the distributor is off it would cause it to turn over accesivly and not start at first and be dumping alot of fuel

 

ahhhhhhhhhh makes alot of sence cuz the bastard cranks real fast.

 

You need a scanner to troubleshoot EFI.

Usually long cranks are not enough fuel, or not enough timing. The fact that it surges and runs rough when it catches, smokes a little, etc had me wondering.

It's unlikely the MAF is the culprit, however you can unplug it and crank and see if it fires. It will ignore MAF input if the sensor is unplugged.

Another chance is a sticky iac, but I'd expect the car to stall at red lights.

If the engine is throwing codes you dont need a scanner to check them. Just a paperclip.

 

To properly diagnose an EFI car you need to view the sensor input, and ensure the data is sane. I've tuned lots of cars that wouldn't make it down the street, yet didn't pop a code..

the only code stored is 32........the infamous egr and for the last four days it starts just fine....i give up for now. thans for all your help everybody
