Please help, I am stuck:ignition issue

Hey guys,

I just bought an 86 firebird with a 2.8 in it as a project car for me to learn on. I figured an older car would be best to learn on and I have had a love affair with third gens since I was 13. The problem I initially ran to was the car would crank, but no start. It had been sitting for over a year. First thing I did was to flush the oil, put some new in it, replace the fuel filter, plugs, wires. It still wouldnt kick over, I tested the spark plug against the engine block for spark, nothing. I changed the ignition coil thinking that this was my problem. I go to turn the key and as I'm praying to jesus for it to start, I realize that the fuel pump wasn't priming anymore. So I clearly had messed with something around the ignition coil that messed with the fuel pump wiring, I checked around the coil and realized that right next to it there is a plug with several different contact points that clips in to the female end, right under that piece I noticed that there were some loose plugs next to what looked like a ground. Problem is both of those plugs were melted completely. Before I messed with that area of the engine the fuel pump had been working well, as I had also tested fuel pressure to make sure that the fuel system wasn't the culprit. Are those plugs for the fuel pump? If not, does anyone have ANY ideas at all. I'm starting to get demoralized with this thing. I apologize for the long post but I figured I would give as much info as I could. Thanks guys, I really appreciate the help.

any chance you can get a photo of the connectors you're referring to? there are a lot of pigtails on these vehicle, but visually it should be easy to identify

take a look at this thread, maybe something will help:

Good place to start. Also, do you have a good repair manual? You should have the best wiring diagrams you can find for the car.

I was just randomly thinking about your response and you mentioned that these cars have a lot of pig tails. Is there a reason there are so many plugs, or is that just how the car I bought was abused?

They have alot of connectors because they are computer controlled and have alot of electrical components. Thats why a good wiring diagram is so important in diagnosis.

Hey guys, I took a picture of the two connectors. I also looked at the links that were posted and really couldnt identify the two connectors since they were so warped. I took a few pics though.

Re: Please help, I am stuck:ignition issue

I believe these wires are part of the automatic AC system and probably weren't used on your car. Most vehicles of a particular car line got the same generic harness. Cars without certain options would have connectors like these that would poke out of the harness and not go to anything. I may be wrong on these connectors. My diagrams for 86 arent great.
