Compressor clutch plate

89 Firebird. The Harrison is an R4, correct?

What are you guys using to hold the clutch plate so you can remove the nut? I rented a clutch plate holder from the local parts store, but it isn't correcty. But I may could get it to work to hold the triangle piece on the clutch. But would like a more correct way to do it.

And I believe the air gap is .020" and torque the nut to 10 ft/lbs?

Looking at replacing the clutch.

Yes.

You need a clutch hub holder.

It looks like a spanner.

You can make one if no one has the right one.

Just cut a spanner out of metal plate and install 3 pins in it to grab the holes.

.02 to .04 are the limits so aim for .03.

10 ft/lbs?
Correct.

Thanks. But my clutch has no 3 holes which is why I couldn't figure out what to use. I have this:

Thanks.

Though are you sure that is correct? I looked it up and it says for V5 & DA6 compressors. I didn't see any mention of an R4 compressor.

V5, DA6, and R4 compressors all have the triangular flange allowing the tool to grip it.

Bring the photo and number to your parts store.

Maybe your store has a loan program so you won’t have to buy one.

Thanks, I'll check it out. The pic I had posted is the one I rented. So, I think that is the only one to rent. I'll keep looking.

I have this and it works for me although it is definitely not "made" for that specific clutch

Keep the tangs on the hub holder loose, and align them into the spiral wound springs portion of the hub against the pins that are used to hold it in place. Tighten them, and have at it.

It's awkward to get it to fit correctly, but once it is on, it works pretty good.

What I was thinking was adjusting those pins tightly to the outside of the 3 sides of the triangle piece. I think when I was messing with it, I flipping it over so the screw part was facing the clutch. I plan on trying that when I get around to messing with it.
