does anyone know what the chances of a std vloume pump sucking a stock 5 qt pan dry thanks for the help

It could happen if you're running a sustained 5000 rpm, like putting a car pan in a boat. But just running down the 1/4 mile dragstrip, no worries.

 

I've never seen a Chevy do it under street conditions or drag racing.

cruseing down the street if i bring it up to about 4500 for more than a second or two oil pressure goes from 50 to about 30 and stays there until i let off of it thanks guys

 

You would have to stay above 7000 for a while to do it. I use a deep sump pan but only have 5-6 quarts in it plus a 3 quart accumulator as a back up. I spin my engine to 7400 and in a 9 second pass down the track, oil pressure stays a constant 70 psi. I only use a standard volume pump but use the high pressure spring.

It really depends on how much oil control you have in the engine. Get the oil back into the pan as fast as possible. Because I use a deep sump pan with a lower capacity in it, I don't use or need a windage tray. I also don't use lifter valley screens and my lifter valley is painted. I want the oil to drain back as fast as possible.

It's only when I quickly slow down after the finish line that I may see pressure drop. Even with the trap in the pan, the oil that's left in the pan moves forward away from the pickup tube. That's where the accumulator comes in. The way I have it set up, if my pressure drops below 15 PSI, the accumulator pushes oil back into the galleries until the pump can start pushing oil again. My low oil warning light is on a 25 PSI switch and it never comes on during a pass.
