Re: water pump and alt as only accesories
This is originally a serp belt car?
If so, you'll need a new water pump and a new alternator to do this. The serp belt water pump is reverse rotation, and you'll need a standard rotation pump. And the alt on a serp car has mounting holes at 12oclock and 4 oclock - only works in the serp bracket - you'll need an alt with mounting holes at 12oclock and 6 oclock, then you can use a standard alt bracket that attaches to the intake and water pump/block which relocates the alt to the pass side.

Yeah its serp...so what youre saying is the water pump and alt spin in opposite directions..So why cant I just mount the alt backwards wherever I want it to go?

You can spin the alternator in either direction. The water pump is directional.

Re: water pump and alt as only accesories
ok so as long as a belt is touching all the pullies sufficiently and the water pump is spinning in its intended direction why would I need to change the water pump to a normal spinning one and move the alternator?

How are you going to route a belt to accomplish that?

Re: water pump and alt as only accesories
Yeah, the alternator issue is with mounting the serp alternator you have on the ols school brackets - it won't mount on those brackets given the bolt hole locations on the alternator.
The water pump does have to be changed, because if you leave the serp setup, it will no longer have reverse belt routing, thus the water pump will not 'pump' any water. I've done it to mine - I had serp setup and switched to the 1/2 serp 1/2 vbelt that the 1987 cars had. I used a standard old school alt mount (Mr Gasket) from the shelf at Autozone ($30) and a standard rotation water pump from a pre-1988 car.
The serp belt I have now runs crank to w/p to alt and back to crank. The vbelt part of mine is just to the p/s pump which runs crank to p/s pump and back to crank. I guess you aren't keeping p/s?
You can see pics of mine here:

I used a crank pulley from a 1987 car, water pump from pre 1988 car, alt from 1987 car, my 1992 p/s pump, and a March p/s bracket and Mr Gasket chrome alt bracket. To use these old school alt brackets, you have to use an alt with bolt holes at 12oclock and 6 oclock - the other's won't work (tried it).
This is the alt bracket I used, ususally on the shelf at Autozone/Advance:
http://www.mr-gasket.com/ProductDeta...minselection=0
Trust me, if you are keeping p/s March is the ONLY bracket that works - they make several different ones, this one worked well for me:

Here's the 1987 Alternator:
http://www.autozone.com/autozone/par.../N-iieqsZ9ci9i
Here's yours:
http://www.autozone.com/autozone/par...uestid=1433480
See the differences in the holes? The depth is also different, YOUR alt will catch on the edge of the old school brackets, and the fan will hit the bracket (trust me I tried). So you have to change alternators.
Hope that helps! Let me know if I can help further!

Re: water pump and alt as only accesories
You'd have to rig some kind of idler pulley to be able to take a standard rotating belt and reverse it - another expense probably higher than a new water pump and alternator.

Re: water pump and alt as only accesories
You could get a shorter belt and run like the picture in the https://www.thirdgen.org/serpentine tech article - but you'd have to keep the stock serp brackets, get an A/C delete pulley, and just bypass the p/s pump - then you could keep your alt and w/p as is.

Re: water pump and alt as only accesories
Here's a few more:
This pic shows the alt bracket. The green circles show where the bracket attaches to the water pump and the intake.
http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/l.../altbrack3.jpg
Another of alt bracket - shows where alt connects to bracket. See what I mean about having the 12oclock and 6oclock holes? The other alternators have different fans and mounting holes that interfere:
http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/l.../altbrack1.jpg
This is the March 20165 p/s bracket - the green shows where the front bracket connects to water pump - the red is a bolt you can't see for the belt. The blue shows where the front bracket connects to the p/s pump. There is another bracket behind the pump that you can't see, that attaches to the block and the back of the p/s pump:
http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/l...S/psbrack1.jpg
And yes, I have 2 belts - 1 wide (like serp) belt runs crank to w/p to alt to crank, 2 is a vbelt that runs crank to w/p to p/s to crank.

The set-up newbie is showing was used by the factory in '86 & '87. I have at least one full set available. I might even be able to scare up two.
Moving the alternator from the driver side to the passenger side may involve changing some wire lengths.
The alternator wiring changed between '86 & '87. I have an alternator for both. Not sure I have all of the brackets for two sets (probably do). I think the wiring (connector) is the same '87 and '88-up, but I wouldn't guarantee that.

thanks man looks way better cuz i still have all the brackets for mine and just have the two now hey wouldnt it be better to just run the vbelt from the crank to p/s and not over the waterpump

Re: water pump and alt as only accesories
I dunno - 6 one 1/2 dozen the other - it all works.
I desperately tried to use stock brackets from a 1987 car, but the car I got the brackets from had A/C, and on the A/C cars the p/s pump stock bracket attached to the A/C bracket - not having the A/C bracket meant that I ended up with not having a solid p/s pump mount - it wobbled a bit - that's when I broke down and got the March bracket for the p/s pump.
