motor swap
motor swap
i have a 1953 pick up that i put a 1990 tpi motor in, i have the stock GM harness & ecm, the harness is from the firewall to the inside of the engine compartment, the engine harness, it all hooked up, starter knock sensor, oxygen, tps, iac, map, all sensors, the egr valve is hooded up with the solenoid, just no smog pump & diverter valve, and the motor cranks over, i have spark, new coil, new coil pickup, ignition module, cap & rotor, plug wires, & brain (ecm) like i said the harness is from the fire wall block connector forward to the engine & the ecm, so i cut the block off connected the large pink wire to the ignition & the reds to the starter & the alternator & i thought it should run but noooo, i dont have 2 jolt to the pump or pulse to the injectors, i can jump the fuel pump and it works, but no pulse at the injector noid lights, the wires i have left over from where i cut the block off at the firewall are a grey, a pink with black strip, a brown i believe is for the alternator, a black with white strip i believe to be systems ground, a purple witch i know gose to the trans (out of the same car) a tan, and the white (the tach lead) if someone could draw me a diagram of how i should hook this up, because i dont know how to read the schematic in the books i have, i know that there is two relays for the fuel pump, one next to the two fan relays, & one in the interior in the dash area do i need that one also, you can email me at jgallo500@sbcglobal.net .thanks to all & all that can do this for me for me

Aside from the wires.... what did you do about the VATS system? Vehicle Anti theft...
not sure exactly where the VATS is under the dash of a TPI car or how it hooks in to the ECM, but no vats no injection I believe. Worst case scenario if you get the VATS module you just use resistors instead of the key. If you don't have the original key there are only 15 (?) simple resistance combos... a trip to radio shack works wonders.

Re: motor swap
There's only one relay for the fuel pump. There might be 2 fan relays (TPI cars alot of times had 2 fans).
I'm guessing here - I'm no TPI expert - but I think you're problem is with the ECM - you mentioned it being a 1990 - is the ECM from a 1990 car? If so, then it's looking for a pulse wave for the injectors to fire - 1990 cars had VATS (vehicle anti-theft systems). The ECM would not fire the injectors unless it received a pulsed wave signal from the VATS module. If you didn't get the VATS module from the donor car and supply it with the right resistor, then the injectors won't fire.
If I'm correct, easiest thing would be to get a new PROM made that has had the VATS programmed out of it.
It might be possible also to just get a pre-1988 TPI chip and use it in your ECM - I don't know.

Re: motor swap
color codes can be a bit tough - grey for example could be one out of several. If it is easy enough to tell which pin they are one the ecm connector someone can tell you what exactly that wire goes to (ie: C18)

Re: motor swap
Pink/Black should be 10A hot in run and start(Pin A6)... or air diverter valve(Pin F4).
Brown if Pin F2 - Air select valve.. i see only this as brown to the ecm...
Grey if Pin E13 Fuel Pump prime - to relay.
Blk/Wht D6 or D7 or A12 - ECM GROUND.
Tan if Pin E15 - ECM GROUND.
White if pin C8 goes to EST/ Distributor.
Purple if E14 - O2 sensor...

Re: motor swap
well if they are roughly any of the above listed connections... therein lies your problem.
