can anyone give me any tips on setting the distributor inside the motor & getting it to point to #1. For some reason I keep coming up a little short & the motor wont turn when i try to start the car. Been stuck at this point for 2 days so Iam open to all suggestions.

You set the engine to TDC compression stroke on # 1 cyl THEN put the dist in and position wires on cap in correct firing order

The rotor can point anywhere when you drop in the distributor - but wherever it points on the cap that's where the #1 plug wire needs to be, then follow firing order around the distributor. It's just that most folks point it towards the #1 cylinder as a reference and reminder.

You just have to make sure you are stabbing it in on the COMPRESSION stroke of the #1 cylinder.
