White smoke coming from Engine

I just got my car to start and I took it out for a spin. I only drove around the block but when I got back, I noticed white smoke coming from the front of the car. I opened the hood and there was smoke coming from the passengers side, it looks like its coming from the side of the engine or somewhere underneath. After the car was off, it kept smoking for a while, maybe 5-10 minutes. I noticed some oil on the bottom of the car, Could it just be oil dripping on the exhaust?

The smoke smells almost like burnt plastic. Some other important thing about the smoke is that it comes out by the carb when I accelerate. Also when I start the car and it smells weird almost like burnt plastic. I have a video of the smoke but I'll upload it later

I'm not sure if this has something to do with the smoke, but I have to pump the gas peddle to start the car and it doesn't start every time I do that

Re: White smoke coming from Engine

my wiring harness shorted last year, it passes thru the firewall on the passenger side, sounds like you have the same issue going on, tow it to a shop and check for a major short.

There doesn't seem to be a short. I checked the oil and its good. The transmission fluid is way past the full level. I can see some small oil spots under the car but they are far apart .

you need to pinpoint the origin as best as you can

Could be valve seals? Not sure without you pinpointing it's location.

I can't really tell, I'm going to drive it again later to see where it's coming from. I did notice more of the smoke was coming from under the distributor.

sounds to me like you got oil from somewhere dripping onto the exhaust.

Re: White smoke coming from Engine

that's what I'm thinking since it keeps smoking long after the car is off. I checked the oil and it's good. The PO mentioned he changed the oil dipstick tube and had a hard time installing it, I'm thinking he didn't do it right and maybe it's spilling some, the thing about that is that the oil level is good and theres not really any big oil spots, the spots I see under the car might have already been there

I looked at it again and the smoke seems to be coming from under the Exhaust manifold or at least around there, I don't have my ramps or I would've already tried to check the underside of the engine.

Re: White smoke coming from Engine

I drove the car today maybe about 2 miles and the smoke didn't come back. When I put it back in the garage, I turned it off and turned it on to see if it would start without having to press the pedal ( it usually won't start without pumping the pedal a bit, I'll get to that problem later), it started perfectly. Then I turned it off again and started it, then that's when the smoke appeared. Also the belt area makes a a squealing noise when I rev it, it sort of sounds like metal on metal. I think the squealing is related to the smoke, I have a video of it revving with no noise and no smoke. When I rev it while it's smoking, the smoke puffs out, I can't see where it coming form though

After it started smoking again I saw that the carb was dripping fuel, I immediately turned off the car. I wanted to locate the smoke origin but it was too risky with the fuel. I have some pics of where the carb started leaking fuel. Another thing I should mention is that the oil smells like gas, Could gas be mixing with the oil causing the white smoke from engine? Should I replace the old carb, I don't even know what kind the carb is, it looks cheap though

I uploaded the videos of the smoke. The vids were taken with my phone

This first one shows around where it's coming from, sorry for the vid, I was holding a work light and my cell phone.

Re: White smoke coming from Engine

You said that the transmission is over full. Is the fluid coming out of the tranny dipstick?

Re: White smoke coming from Engine

I don't think so. It's about an inch or two past the "full" line, but it doesn't go to the top. I just remembered that when I start it smoke comes out near the carb, like on the vid where I'm revving it, but it smells weird almost like the smell a flint makes when you strike it

Could it be you are pumping the excess trans fluid out the trans dipstick/filltube onto your exhaust? Not good to over fill a automatic trans.

Re: White smoke coming from Engine

That's what I was thinking. That's how I got it, I've owned it for about 3 weeks. I just realized something, I drove the car normally yesterday and it didn't smoke until I took it back into the garage. The driveway to the garage is a bit steep, maybe it's spilling when I drive up into the garage. I don't know what type of transmission it has, The PO swapped engines, it has a 350 now and I don't know if he changed the transmission too.

I'm going to change the oil soon, I want to do a drain & fill of the ATF but I don't what kind I need and what transmission I have. I guess I can compare fluid pans but that would have to be until I get the car on ramps

Look at the pan shape, and then you can tell.

Re: White smoke coming from Engine

Here's a pic of the driveway, it's steeper at the beginning. Hopefully the smoke is just ATF spilling when I drive up. I'm still a noob at changing transmission fluid, I've only done a drain & fill on my last car which was a Honda civic and only required removing the drain plug bolt. How hard is it to change the fluid on T/A's?

Re: White smoke coming from Engine

I found where the smoke is coming from, it looks like its coming from the cat. Could a bad cat make it smoke?

Re: White smoke coming from Engine

Usually a bad cat gets VERY hot and makes the car run poorly. Any smoking would be because it is burning s*&t from being so hot.

Re: White smoke coming from Engine

It does get very hot. I looked at it today after driving it about 10 miles and I could see the heated air around it. The car sometimes doesn't have a lot of power. I floored it a few times and it wasn't accelerating that well.
