Crane Gold's 1.5 's noisy?
Hello again TGO land. I've got another question.
As a few of you know I've swapped heads and cam (finally!!) and here's my dilemma. I have Crane Gold 1.5's on the exhaust side and they seem to be a bit noisy, more so on my number 7 cylinder. I've tried adjusting it both engine cold and while running and it still seems to be quite noisy. I've used a stethescope to try to pin point it and the noise is only coming from the Gold's. I have Comp Cams 1.6's on the intake and they are quiet as hell. Has anybody else encountered this before? If so, what are some solutions I might be able to use.

Re: Crane Gold's 1.5 's noisy?
Well I found out why number seven was so noisy, part of the inner race for the rocker was chipped off. So luckily I had a few spares to choose from for replacement. I have adjusted these damn rockers a few times and they are so loud I can hear them in the car. especially around 2000+ rpms. I checked my push rods on each of these and they are all perfect. so what the hell is causing these damn things to be so loud? I'm about to toss them in the trash for a set of 1.52 comp roller tips like I already have in the 1.6's. the car also seems to be alittle down on mid range power. I'm a little stumped on this so if anybody has a clue that would be awesome.

Re: Crane Gold's 1.5 's noisy?
Ok I found something weird, I was going to adjust the rockers again and I noticed on my number 7 exhaust rocker isn't putting out the same amount of oil as the other, what could cause this? Here's a video of what I'm talking about. I really need some help on this guys. I don't know if it's a stuck lifter or something else. my car has a major flat spot in the 2000-2500 rpm range. Come on guys somebody has to have a clue as to what is going on here.

The biggest thing I want to know is has anybody ever dealt with this same issue. Now I've adjusted it 3/4 turn and it only starts to tick when it warms up. When it's cold it's as quiet as a church mouse. Is it a bad lifter or just in need of an oil change because the oil is only a month old.

maybe not enough pre-load " dont over do it " i always do the 3/4 turn turn on engine then do the loose til it clicks then tight until quiet THEN 3/4 turn , thats how i do it . are OE lifters ?

Re: Crane Gold's 1.5 's noisy?
yes there are the OE lifters, it only seems to be the number 7 that is making the noise. I checked the push rod and even replaced the rocker. I'm about to rip the intake off, pull the lifter to inspect it and either "repair" or replace the lifter. I'm at my wits end with this..

Re: Crane Gold's 1.5 's noisy?
Using your original lifters with a cam upgrade was not the best way to go. The oil that squirts from the top of the push rod comes from the lifter. You have a bad lifter. This must be a roller cam right? You certainly wouldnt reuse lifters with a flat tappet. You need to pull the intake and swap out lifters. I dont quite understand using different ratios exhaust to intake. I tend to trust my cam grinder to design lift and duration into the lobes. But whatever.
BTW, I run Gold Race rockers with my huge cam and they work beautifully right up to 7,000rpm. And yes they are a little noisy with this cam. But with .560 lift in only 290 degrees, I would be suprised if they werent.

I'm using 1.5's on the exhaust due to the fact the stock ZZ4 springs can't handle over .525 lift. If I were to it would bump the lift from .510 to .544. And yes a roller cam indeed.

Re: Crane Gold's 1.5 's noisy?
Yeah, almost has to be. Flat tappet has to be installed with new lifters to avoid lobe flattening. I'm puzzled really by how many people are still using flat tappets. If they only new what theyre missing. Replace your lifters. Be sure to prime the new ones with oil. You can soak them, oil hole up in a can of oil but the best way is to make a priming tool from an old push rod and pump the lifter piston while holding it submerged in oil. Pump until the piston wont depress any longer.
