Circle Track Dirt??

After a couple years of not racing I just started building a 92 camaro pure stock. I have seen a few of these run and they are wicked fast on dirt. Has anyone had any luck? I already ditched the stock torque arm and pan hard rod and put links in.

I've got some tickets for the USMTS Winter Nationals. This weekend at:
http://www.houstonraceway.com/
I've seen a few of the F-Bodies on dirt, very fast indeed!

Re: Circle Track Dirt??

It really depends on the class of racing. Many lower oval classes have banned f-bodies because they have an advantage. G-bodies are more common. With a full frame vehicle, they can take a lot more abuse and suspension/driveline/chassis is easier to repair.

Re: Circle Track Dirt??

Well, these cars have only been around for about 29 years now, and even though for much of that time they were the ONLY performance oriented cars from GM besides the Vette, I doubt ANYONE associated with racing has ever noticed them; and since their resemblance to "late models" is so subtle, I doubt anyone anywhere at any time has ever made that connection, either...

So,,,, .... ummm,,,, ..... yeah......

Where I come from, "pure stock" means PURE STOCK. Which in the case of these cars means, if you get challenged and they catch you with a 4-link under it, you get bumped into some other class; probably late models in fact. Don't bet on participating in many "level playing field" events with it unless EVERBODY in that class at that track is already allowed to run that setup, in which case you won't have any advantage for long.

They are starting to allow these cars at a lot of tracks now. G Bodies are getting harder to find for a descent price. You can find third gens everywhere. Cheap. I am allowed to run it as long as no 5 speeds. So I went with an MC-1 Muncie 3 speed. They said I could put links for TA and pan hard so I did. I must weigh 3400lbs though. Plus 50 more for the 602 crate. Car is awesome though. I think it will be just a matter of a few weeks and I will be the car to beat. Then I suspect they may outlaw again after I walk the dog on them a few times. The hardest part was getting caster and camber and ackerman right using stock stuff. I run 2.5" of stagger in the rear and 1.5 in front. Using DOT tires.

Re: Circle Track Dirt??

I have built and raced two 3rd gen's and over this winter I have begun my third,I personally will never build any other type of chassis because these things work freakin amazing! I hope to share my knowledge of building and setup, remember these things were designed to handle, leave granny's swayin grocery getter Monte at home!

Re: Circle Track Dirt??

Im going to bump this since I rarely see it mentioned on here.

Local 1/2 mile track just started a new pure stock class where 3rd gens are legal. Curious if anybody on here currently or has dirt tracked one before.

Car: 88 firebird 2.8 to 5.7 swapped
Engine: goodwrench 350 (made in mexico)
Transmission: currently running a th200
Axle/Gears: 3.73 (v6 stock gearing)
Re: Circle Track Dirt??

I race a 88 firebird in a pure stock type class, though it's called "street stock" the rules are very similar. Car started as a bone stock 2.8 mpfi. I ran it with the v8's, as there is no 6cy class, for a season and the car ran great! very competitive. A 350 now sits under the hood, backed by a th200 and am working on tuning on tuning the suspension.. its work in progress.. haha
