Timing wont advance when you hit throttle
Timing wont advance when you hit throttle
So as the title says, I am in need of some assistance.
91 Camaro TBI 305
The timing on the car wont advance when you hit the throttle. Another thing I noticed is when I try to set the timing to 0 degrees, it wants to die badly. One more thing was noticed as well, sorry everyone, but when I disconnect the vacuum line that goes to the brake cylinder, the idle goes up, the car doesnt try to die.
Any and all help is appreciated.

Re: Timing wont advance when you hit throttle
Why are you trying to set it to Zero?
To be expected, you have created a vac leak
Works the same as opening the throttle ; lets more air in

Re: Timing wont advance when you hit throttle
As the other guy said, why in the world would you want to set it to ZERO? Also, anytime you start letting air into the intake/engine your car will idle higher. Give us more information on what you're trying to do please.
The stock timing for your car should be about 6 degrees, maybe 8. Sounds like you've got semi-bigger problems than just high idling?
Thank you.

Re: Timing wont advance when you hit throttle
Alright, I was not trying to set it at zero, I was checking to make sure that it would move both neg and pos. Right now, its probably set at +12, its about 1/4 inch past the teeth marking. Even when it is at around +6, the car wants to stumble and die. So when checking this, we would set it, then hit the throttle, and the timing wouldnt move.
This all started because the car was wanting to die all the time, so I changed the plugs and dist, cap and rotor. The old dist was rusted inside. When the car is warmed up and been running for a bit, it will run better and not try to die. Is it possible that my computer is shot? I have no SES light come on, and the bulb does work correctly
Thanks again guys
Rick

Re: Timing wont advance when you hit throttle
Do you have the tan/white (I think its these colors) wire connected that your supposed to disconnect while setting the timing?

Re: Timing wont advance when you hit throttle
Yes, the tan/black wire is disconnected. I even checked the timing with it connected, and with it disconnected. There is no change with it connected and disconnected....I AM CLUELESS ON this, please help.

Its supposed to be connected though for the timing to advance. You disconnect it only to set the initial timing.

Re: Timing wont advance when you hit throttle
Timing should advance some even with the tan/blk wire disconnected. The ign module has a small amount of advance built into it to allow it to run in Memcal fault mode. Also, after setting timing, the code 43 must be cleared from the ECM before normal EST function will resume. What brand of dist did you install. I recommend you return it in exchange for another one since it appears to have a defective module.
Re: Timing wont advance when you hit throttle
Its a Cardone dist. At the very most, it looks like it moves about 2 degrees, but it should move about 20, correct? This thing is kicking my ***. There was no SES light on when I restarted the car, so it must have cleared. Could it be possible that the wire itself is broken somewhere? What pin does it go into the computer at? What places can I check this at besides there?

Re: Timing wont advance when you hit throttle
As said above, even with a dead computer and/or disconnected wiring to the dist the timing will still advance some as commanded by the ignition control module (inside the dist). You should see it jump up around 15-20 degrees as rpms go above 1200 or so.
If it's not moving at all the fault lies AT LEAST in the ICM or DIST. Chasing down a problem that may or may not exist outside the distributor won't help the problem inside the dist.

Re: Timing wont advance when you hit throttle
Thanks for the info, I will check the timing again and pull the dist and get it checked out. How are those machines for checking the ICM at Autozone, good?

Sorry man. A1 Cardone is garbage. Autozone has a tester for the Ig Mod. However, I see them pass alot of bad mods.
