You have to have an OBD I code reader to get the codes...if that's what your asking?

What year is the car? Only later model cars have a few wires at the OBD-II port, usually at least power, ground, and data for the scantool. Earlier ALDL ports have quite a few wires for testing things like the fuel pump and such.

If you have an OBD-II based PCM (96 and above), you will need a scantool, or at least a basic code reader from the local autoparts store. Cant just stick a paperclip in those.

The 96 and up only have serial data at the OBD port. DONT stick anything in these. Theres +12 volts and ground, so you could cause a direct short. 95 and earlier are still OBD 1/1.5, and some will still flash codes with the paperclip. These are a bit harder to scan as theyre not standardized. The easiest way is to use something like tunerpro-rt and a homemade serial cable to scan the computer.

Hello dimented24x7!!

That's what I figured, the OP's car having only a few wires, you figure that it maybe a 4 bbl 305?

The OP doesn't say, but 4 bbl 305 with about three wires could be terminal a/b and one for the all computer controlled solenoids???

Certainly a possiblity that its an early model as well. In that situation, the computer will be of minimal help if its a CC carb.
