Re: Modern engine oil

You should have a roller camshaft and if so that oils would be great.

Re: Modern engine oil

If your engine is original to the car, then it came equipped with a roller cam. The additive isn't necessary, and is of no benefit, with a roller cam.

We use Brad Penn Oil, At $4.95 qt. it is cheap insurance. We also try to use roller cams when ever we can. http://www.performancespecialtiesinc...rformance-oil/

Re: Modern engine oil

ZDDP is a popular addtive for rodders but you can also get "break in" oil, its a term used to get around the loops hole of them making them take the good stuff out of oil.

Re: Modern engine oil

not sure what he is refering too but Quaker State has had a bad rep for a long while, We learned that in tech school to never use it in a small engine [ small engines class, motorcycles, boats, tractors] As folks would bring in stuff for repair and the ones that had a inch of thick goop on the bottom of the pan had owners that used QS.

I've used Quackerstate Outboard in my Suzuki two stroke, years ago, never any problems, and I have used Penzoil GP 20W50 in my Firebird without problems too...???

Re: Modern engine oil

That oil is fine, and you don't need any additives, since you have a roller cam. Its similar to what I've used in my '97 Camaro and i never had any problems with it.

Re: Modern engine oil

To the OP: What made you pick 0W-40 as opposed to the factory recommended weights, or any other for that matter??

Re: Modern engine oil

I use 5W-40 in mine. The tight clearances in the bottom end need a thinner winter weight oil, while the lifters need 40 weight at temperature, or they bleed down and tick. The 0W will be a bit thinner at lower temps, and circulate better when the engine is cold. The only thing Ive wondered about the 0W oils is how well they hold their viscosity as the oil ages. That oil probably has a lot of VIs in it to give it that flatter viscosity curve.

It can help with the rocker arms and pushrods, which have high loads and are sliding contacts like a flat tappet. With a factory cam and springs, its probably not as critical as an aftermarket setup would be with higher spring pressures.

Re: Modern engine oil

I understand the purpose behind your situation of course, but I was taking a guess from the OPs comments that he has a near stock setup that woudn't dictate any change from normal unless he observed changes.

This is what I always think of when I see the large spread in cold and warm oil ratings. I've heard many a' stories about oils like this not having the integrity of a 5W-30 for example.

Plus its not gonna hurt anything it can only help, so there is no down side to it.

Oil has changed a lot in recent years. Visit BITOG for everything you ever wanted to know about oil and more.

Re: Modern engine oil

My engine is stock indeed.
I use Castrol, because I've been using it since I was a kid in everything with an engine.
The Castrol RS Power1 0W40 is the latest, and best oil Castrol has ever made in Europe, and since it is 100% synthetic, there are no VI's in it at all.
I choose 0W40 because it comes close to the recommended 0W30, 0W40 being slightly thicker when at operating temps, which wouldn't hurt, since the car has done about 100.000 mls.
