Check engine light come on during deceleration
I've Been lurking this site for months but I haven't been able to find an answer to my problem after tons of searches...
I have a 91 Camaro RS 3.1L automatic with 125k miles... car runs perfect but with one exception.
The check engine light comes on if I let off the gas and idle When driving highway speeds (above 65) and coast for a few seconds (let's say about 8-10 seconds) I can notice a slight loss in power and the local advance auto parts doesn't have an obd1 code reader so I don't know how to check my codes.
The light turns off if the car is turned off for at least 5 seconds and power is returned to normal. I previously didn't have a muffler and It was doing it before AND now after the new exhaust, it doesn't sputter, it doesn't choke, I do notice an odd smell though, but it does go away if I turn off the car and then start it again... I wish I had the codes it would really help in this thread. any info on this problem or info on where to find an obd1 code reader is much appreciated.
Thanks in advance!!!

You don't need a code reader just use a paperclip to jump the terminal and count the flashes. Do a search it's been covered many times.

I'm not sticking a paper clip anywhere that's a good way to short something

Re: Check engine light come on during deceleration
first of all.... that IS how you check codes... you use the paper clip as a bridge, and the car flashes a code that tells you what's wrong.
second of all, I would bet you have a EGR fault. The same thing happened to me a few months age and it ended up being a vacuum hose that had come loose. a very small vacuum hose on the passenger side of the engine
third of all, don't go insulting people that are trying to help you.

Thank you mark. I'm not insulting anyone, just saying I don't think GM had paper clips in mind when it came time.to reading codes, ill do a search and find some info about this method of grabbing codes..... I'm just trying to fix the car not make it worse, pardon my ignorance on the McGiver code reading techniques. Lol

Autozone gives out these keys that are designed to be used as jumpers
they can also show you where it goes, and tell you what the codes mean that your car flashes

Re: Check engine light come on during deceleration
Ya I did a search saw the key but I can just grab a paper clip from work today, like I said I've been lurking for months but I'm familiar with certain anonymous image posting boards and I have built up a lack of trust for what I read on the internet.
Thankfully this site has some good people on it.

Now that you've done a search you have found out the reply to your question was absolutely correct.
Remember, the information you get on these sites is free. Much of it is good and hopefully as you gain knowledge and experience (more important), then you too will help out a newb with questions such as the one posed by you
