Vortec 906 heads
This seems like a good dead for a nice flowing set of budget heads. But good deals are scary so what am I missing here. I have heard these would be a nice set of street heads in the 350-400 hp range with a 355 and a mild .500 lift cam. Am I totally wrong.

Re: Vortec 906 heads
They are good for the money. I had a set but they already sold. I had a BUNCH of work done to them though.

Re: Vortec 906 heads
It doesnt say much about who did the work on those. They're obviously modified since the valves are bigger than stock, and I'm pretty sure they're not 185cc stock. Hope whoever did that work really knows what they're doing and didnt ruin the swirl flow characteristics of the vortecs. It also mentions that the springs are good for 600 (seems kinda stupid since the shape of the ports doesnt flow too well past low 500s, actually starts to get worse, unless they fixed that with their porting), but not even a little mention about whether they modified the seats to allow more than the stock 480ish lift. Might want to call about that to make sure.

Re: Vortec 906 heads
I dont know why they'd call it a 906 then, since 906 is a gm casting number. The less desirable of the two vortec numbers actually. It seems more likely that they're modified overstock official gm ones. I'm a believer in "If it has some good feature, you'd better believe they'd advertise that". In this case being made by any well known aftermarket company would be a good feature and certainly would be mentioned.

I say if you're going to fork out nearly $700 on a set of "decent" iron heads you might as well save up another $250-300 and buy a set of better aluminum ones like Canfields which can be had for $900-$1000

Re: Vortec 906 heads
Arent those now the Jegs brand head?
On the Vortecs if someone has taken a grinder to them ALWAYS get a flow sheet if possible it will tell you if they were ported right or not.
As said above the ports are a little sensitive (actually well optimized) to porting. Do it wrong and flow will be in the toilet. Combustion chamber is probably the most efficient one out there dont want to be changing that up, really.

Still plenty of companies that have their heads in stock:
http://www.competitionproducts.com/C...m/products/18/
You will not find a better brand new head for a cheaper price.
