Re: engine removal
Nothing special required to switch to a 350 - your factory carb setup will go right on (and it's the best option).

ziploc sandwich size storage bags
masking tape
sharpie for marking things
engine hoist
chain
plug for tranny tail (you will remove the tranny at the same time, it's easier and just makes sense if you're diving in)
4 jack stands
2 floor jacks or 1 floor jack and 1 bottle jack
a few chunks of 2x4 wood
i won't go through draining all the fluids including tranny but you know that
remove radiator and ALL accessories
remove dist cap
unbolt exhaust from manifolds
trace all the wiring harnesses, disconnect and label everything including hints as to where they connect
remove all 4 wheels
remove motor mount bolts
get underneath
remove drive shaft
if you have lots of wood, or even a 5th jack stand, remove torque arm and place jack stand under diff housing so it doesn't just hang supported by shock and control arm
remove the 1 nut holding the tranny mount in the middle of the cross member
place floor jack under tranny with chunk of wood, raise tranny 1 inch
remove 4 bolts and remove tranny cross member
disconnect speedometer cable
it's ok to leave tranny cooler lines installed on tranny
it's ok for tv cable to be left on
remove shifter cable
go to front, attach chain to engine
get a pry bar
have someone with you
begin to lift engine
lower jack on tranny
raise engine more
push down on rear of engine, raise engine more
pull hoist away a bit
push down more on tranny housing while raising hoist more
pull it more to the front
raise more
pry motor mount over the fixed mounts
engine pops free a little
raise engine more
swing it around and lower
it's ok to put a block of wood under the pulley and tranny tailshaft
remove bolts from tranny
separate tranny from engine
no worries if this is really your first time, it's not difficult, it's nothing more than removing a part .......a really big part.
most important- after doing all of this, do you really want to put someone else' used engine into your vehicle? Get it rebuilt before putting another engine into your car and replace all the hoses too and be sure to service the tranny too
it's also good to replace tranny mount and torque arm bushing

you just refreshed my memory this will be my second engine removal i wasn't clear if i wanted to do it because of the wiring the first engine i remove was a swapped chevy 350 and there were almost no wiring to remove but it should be that bad i removed both tranny and engine on my own
im going with used engine and tranny because of my budget right now
i don't feel like im skilled enough to rebuild an engine on my on well at least not the bottom end of the engine and ive been quoted 1200 before just for a rebuilt and i don't have that to spend at once any advice on what i should do?

Re: engine removal
Some folks get bitten bad with used engines, other do fine. My 350 is a late 1960's early 1970's block, with smog 1970's heads. But the previous owner of it installed 10:1 dometop pistons to get better compression, and a mild cam of some sort. It's not by any means a perfect motor, but it's been in the car 4 years now with no issues at all, and is a blast compared to the 305 I previously had.
We all work with what we've got and can afford, and as with anything, sometimes we get lucky, sometimes we get screwed. Kinda depends on what that used motor is costing you - I wouldn't pay more than $1000 for a complete running engine, and for that much I better hear it run as well. I paid $600 for my 350 complete, but never heard it run. But it was carb to pan with Performer RPM intake, and moved freely, so it was worth the risk to me.

Re: engine removal
camaronewbie nailed it. You might get lucky, you might get burned.
But, be sure to set aside at least $300 for fluids, filters, belts, tranny mount, tranny filter, tie wraps, hoses, clamps, plugs, wires, cap, rotor.
Now is the time to replace those small vacuum hoses and heater core hoses that are a pain to reach when the engine is installed
