VSS and Speedometer issues.
I have a 1987 Camaro with the TPI 305 and a 5 speed. I got a engine code 24 which I looked up and found was a speed sensor issue. I can't find the speed sensor. My speedometer also has stopped working. I was told to replace the speedometer cable which is proving to be much more difficult than I thought. I cant get behind the gauge cluster to disconnect the cable from the back of the gauge. Does anyone have any ideas on how I might get to the back of the gauge cluster? Also does any one know what type of VSS my Camaro should have and where it should be located? I have already looked at the transmission and did not find the VSS there. Any info is much appreciated. Thanks.

Yeah I did everything that the book says but when I get to the part where it says to reach behind the cluster and disconnect the speedo cable I get stuck. I have taken out all the screws and parts it says to remove and the right side of the cluster is free moving but it seem as thought the speedo cable is what is keeping me from pulling the left side out far enough to disconnect the cable and get behind the cluster. There is no space for me to get my hand behind the cluster like the book says, I have tried from the top the bottom. I have tried everything I can think of.

I had the same problem with my k5 blazer.Try pushing the speed o cable from under the hood at the fire wall to the inside of car. That should give you the room to release the cable!!!

Re: VSS and Speedometer issues.
It has a junction or something about a foot and a half after it passes through the fire wall. I can't get it to disconnect. The new cable is a straight shot though its not in two pieces like the one thats on there. Did yours have anything like that?
Re: VSS and Speedometer issues.
Mine was a one pcs cable.Do you have any slack in your cable under your hood? Mine is on a k5 blazer so it is diffrent than your car.I just grabbed the cable under the hood and pushed to the fire wall 4" or so!!!

There is no slack as it sits so thats why we are trying to disconnect that junction. I tried pushing it in through the fire wall but it didn't move at all.

If you're certain the cable is the issue, cut it.

Re: VSS and Speedometer issues.
I just finished replacing the cable and everything seems to be functioning as it should. I also used the info from the link that JamesC posted on fixing the trip odometer and that is working as well. Thanks to everyone for their help.
