Loud thud from back of car when...

When I'm sitting and go to take off in drive there is a loud thud and a jerk from the car that feels like it's coming from the passenger side rear of the car. It only does this when I take off some what spirited, not flooring it or racing it. But if I want to pick up decent speed from a stop. Now if I take off easing into it and going slow, the loud thud/jerk does not happen.

At first I thought it was a u-joint but when I manually shift through the gears sitting still there is no noise.

Then I thought maybe busted transmission/motor mount, I checked them all over and they are fine.

Then I thought maybe it had to do with when I adjusted my TV cable and I possibly adjusted it wrong. So I re adjusted it and tested the shift points, everything is spot on and car is not shifting to hard or to soft.

The only other things I can think of are possibly:

Transmission going out?
Rear End going out?
Severely busted rear suspension?

I don't know so if any of you can ask the proper questions from me, or have any clue as to what could possibly be causing the issue. That would help, I know random noises are SO hard to help with when not in person. So I don't expect a lot, but I'm kind of clue less at this point. Thanks...

Re: Loud thud from back of car when...

Sounds like a busted tranny mount to me - you said you checked, does that mean you looked at it still on the car? You can't see a busted tranny mount unless you take it off. Tranny mount is supposed to be one piece, when you take it off, if it falls apart into 2 pieces, that is the culprit.

Only takes about 20 minutes in the driveway. You need ramps, a jack, a 15mm socket, and a 13mm socket. Put front of car on ramps. Place jack under tranny, just touching, don't jack it up. Take out 4 crossmember bolts (15mm). Lower tranny a tad, remove the 3 bolts that hold the mount in place (13mm). Replace and reattach everything. Tranny mount is $8 for rubber, $25 for poly.

I didn't take it out to look at it, maybe I should just go ahead and replace it when I can anyways. It seems if I drive the car a bit easier then everything is ok. Until I have the chance to fix it, I need to buy some ramps as well...

Maybe a rear trailing arm bushing.

Re: Loud thud from back of car when...

My guess is transmission mount also. You might be able to tell if you put your hand on the trans tunnel inside the car and take off then. Mine would actually hit hard enough to vibrate the shifter. When I replaced mine before it looked alright from the outside but after I unbolted the mount and jacked up the trans it came out in 2 pieces.

I had the same thing happen to my IROC, and it was the tranny mount. Sounds bad, but VERY minor.

Re: Loud thud from back of car when...

You can crawl under the car and push up HARD on the tranny tailshaft. It will separate a split tranny mount pretty obviously- the rubber "biscuit" will be ripped right in half.

Most aftermarket poly trans mounts have "interlocking" upper and lower brackets. Even if the poly "biscuit" ever rips in half (unlikely) the two parts are linked to eachother preventing the problem from ever happening like with a stock mount.

3rd gen Camaros are particularly hard on tranny mounts because of the torque arm from the rear end that mounts to the side of the tranny. I've even owned V6 Camaros that would tear a stock mount in half every few years.

Should the problem be related to the trans mount, you might consider info in the following link, which debates Energy Suspension, Prothane and OE rubber:

Re: Loud thud from back of car when...

Be wary of polyurethane tranny mounts being thicker than a stock rubber bushing. They have been known to cause driveshaft vibrations, due to the new angle of the driveshaft. I've put one in a 90 RS/T5 before & gotten the vibes. Put in a stock rubber bushing & the vibrations went away. Also seen threads here on TGO from other people having the same problem.

Check your rear stabilizer shaft bolts,I had the same noise back in the day,and one of them was busted,so I had them both changed and the thud or clang was gone.actually it was more of a bang.

Re: Loud thud from back of car when...

I had somebody look at the bottom of the car when I caused it to produce the sound, and from what they could tell it seems to be coming from the torque arm on the rear end. Is there by chance a bushing that can wear out on the torque arm that can be replaced? It's really starting to feel like maybe my passenger rear wheel is hoping a bit? It's so hard to tell... But I have a feeling from what the guy said as he looked at it, that the torque arm is the reason for my issues.

Re: Loud thud from back of car when...

The torque arm has a bushing, just like all the other suspension stuff has. Like the tranny mount, LCAs, PHB, etc. They all have a bushing.

Not the same type, but they all have one.

Re: Loud thud from back of car when...

I think while I'm at it I might as well replace both the torque arm bushing and the transmission mount. And from the sound of it I can get away with using the ES torque arm bushing, but I should probably go with the Spohn transmission mount. I will get all of that ordered Friday, they sound simple enough to replace. I just need to fit under the car to do so lol.

Re: Loud thud from back of car when...

I had mine done at Meineke while having my exhaust installed, came across the broken one by accident so had them replace them both while in the air.

Re: Loud thud from back of car when...

There is 2 different torque arm mounts. 1 that faces the tranny & 1 that faces away, to match the torque arm.

Look under your car & verify which one you need, before buying one.

Re: Loud thud from back of car when...

Check your trans mount bushing. Also, check the rear torque arm bushings. Had one make an intermittent clunk at times with a T/A. A bad trans mount sounds bad, expecially when you torque on it at low speeds. Lifts up and slams the tunnel, tears up the seals, bad. Bad torque arm bushings makes it have sloppy handling with a periodic jerk.
