350 crate from mexico

so i've been trying to figure out what i have for a motor and have found lots of info here, thanks to the search feature. i'm only stuck with one set of numbers. i'll start off with what i have: its a 350 crate from mexico (block casting 10066036). i'm assuming the heads are the garbage ones that came with it, havn't had time to check yet. i think i figured out one set of the numbers on the front under the pass side head (1m0627 may mean chevy made in mexico on june 27).

the 2nd set of numbers in the same spot that i found the date are the ones that i'm having trouble with. it reads 6h04. everything i found only has 3 letters/numbers combo. anyone have any insight on this code or is it just something that really doesn't mean anything?

Re: 350 crate from mexico

i'm also planing to do a small build to this motor since i have a set of vortec heads on the shelf. since its not a roller block i'm thinking of this cam http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CCA-12-402-4/ . its Duration at 050 inch Lift
212 int./218 exh.Advertised Duration
260 int./268 exh.

i'm planing on keeping the tpi intake, don't want to go carb and can't afford the other intakes. so what do you think?

Re: 350 crate from mexico

New or used?

That may seem like a dumb question sence described it as a crate motor but just for confirmation sake...

Re: 350 crate from mexico

its used cause thats what is still in it. it was originally a 350 tpi according to the rpo codes and vin. i'm guessing the motor was put in back in the early 90's so it may have been done by the dealer. the guy i bought it from didn't do it, neither did the guy he got it from, i talked to them both. that covers from about 1998 or so till now.

Inthat case, do th basics...

Front and rear seal, pan gasket, etc. If you replace the heads and cam it might be a good idea to rebuild/remachine the shortblock. No time like the present...

Re: 350 crate from mexico

The Targetmaster GM remanufactured engines were a cheap way out when dealers or anyone else had to replace a motor. Whoever owned the car at the time that was done got the short end of the stick. The factory replacement for the L98 long block is what should have gone into the car but the dealer went cheap. Probably some lubetech forgot to put oil in it and destroyed the original motor. The Targetmasters are no longer made as far as I know. It's all Goodwrench now. The Goodwrench engines are very good for the price.
