Poor engine power

Lately my car has been running poorly, It had a missfire and today i fixed that with some new plugs but the problem that still persists is the car almost seems to stumble as if its starving for fuel kinda. I don't know if the cat could be clogged, I did change the fuel filter and the fuel pump is a few months old. The car just seemed to loose the power it previously had. not sure if its bad wires and cap and rotor??? I notice the problem around 50 MPH if im just cruising at that speed and i hit the pedal more (not to the floor) but if i punch it it doesn't want to go and if i punch it to the floor if i watch the rpms they litteraly rise in increments, it slowly bounces, and i feel the engine bounce up in rpms as well, its not a steady rise. 2500-2700-3000-3200, just like that, the rpms will bump off the previous rpms in a way. And when the car shifts from gear to gear it really pulls back alot, The shifs are smooth but when it goes from gear to gear it feels like i hit the brakes.... Any help would be appreciated!!!!!! and at idle my rpms bounce a bit, not anymore than 100, but it still hunts around for an idle.

Also i noticed a crackling everytime im at a red light and give it gas, or if the car is cruising and i give it gas it will make a crackling sound, kinda like how a car would sound if its about to stall (theres no signs of stalling though) Idk, Its confusings. Thanks guys!

Re: Poor engine power

I'm having a similar problem with my '92 TA 5.0 tpi. I have installed a new cat earlier this year, new plugs, wires, cap, and rotor. It always seemed to max out about 80 mph, last week I tried to push it further and it started to run worst. I installed a new pump, screen, and filter and it still runs like crap. Funny thing it idles fine and while in park it revs perfect. Then when I get on the road it doesn't go over 45 mph.???

Re: Poor engine power

My friend has a 90 Firebird with a 3.1 V6. It had low power like that for a while, I stopped messing with what I was trying to fix on it cus the part he got was off ebay that was the wrong size, it was the throttle kickdown cable, but his brother tweaked the cable a bit and then it shifts better, and the car seems to have much more power than normal. Its weird how messing with the TV cable did that to his car

Re: Poor engine power

How did he "tweak" it? and what exactly does that do?

Re: Poor engine power

Well, It honestly seems to be something getting restricted. I had the same problem with an 83 camaro with a clogged cat, thats why i posted this thread, but it has different symptoms... Did you change your fuel filter? try using seafoam to run in the tank, oil and suck into the intake... I'm not sure what could be wrong there

Re: Poor engine power

He added a clip or something to the TV cable to make it seem "Shorter" or something, I didnt see it myself yet. But doing that definitely helped. There is a noticeable power difference now. I think before that was causing the transmission fluid pump to put too much pressure thru the lines and thats why his car felt sluggish and was guzzling gas like hummer.

Re: Poor engine power

ohh I know what you mean. Yea i don't know if thats what it is. but listen, for sh*ts and giggles i let my car get to operating temp and I reved it to about 4500 rpm, after 3000 the rpms would jump up 200 rpm as i depressed the gas pedal smoothly, Is there an idle speed motor on these? after taking it up to 4500 rpm i let off the gas and it stalled... Whats that sound like???

Re: Poor engine power

start with basics fuel filter, plugs, cap, rotor, and wires, Napa has a 10% mailin rebate this month for tuneup parts. After that check to make sure your fuel pressure is good. Any codes?

Re: Poor engine power

No codes, I just put in a new fuel filter in, I did plug wires and cap and and rotor last year. I did spark plugs the other day. It's just wierd the car runs like that. That's why I posted asking if theres an idle speed motor on the car because it would make sence if these cars do have them because when i start the car in the morn it will idle up (for the choke to warm the engine) then come down like it should to about 800 rpm then dip down to 500 rpm and just lug at idle, but then after about 5 mins, the idle will jump up to 800 and be fine and run like that the rest of the day when warm. It seems as if someone gave it gas and it pulled the choke on or something, but the car is fuel injected. And if the car doesn't warm up long enough to jump up and i put it in drive the idle will go down till it almost stalls then jump back up to a healty "in drive" idle at about 600 rpm. But when it jumps up i hear a wierd noise like a small and short wine in the engine. Could it be a idle speed motor? and like i said it does that jumping when i rev it

Also i do not have a fuel pressure tester. I did look at the injectors and they seem fine, they spray with a cone shape and they seem to have the same pressure (visually) as they did before.

Re: Poor engine power

Like i said i heard of this before. Your supposed to put a zip tie around the cable by the pedal to make it shorter because alot of cars throttle bodies arent truly opened all the way when the pedal is fully depressed

Re: Poor engine power

Is it an H.E.I Distributor? I could be the vaccume advance or timing maybe? not sure but I had the same problem with my 83 camaro that i mentioned in this thread. I thought it was vaccume advance/timing, well it ended up being a clogged cat. Wouldn't rev past 2500 rpm nor drive past 30 mph. It was bad!
