New to Thirdgen! Engine HELP, 88 Forumla 5.7

Hey Guys, new to the board, also included a pic of my '88 Formula 5.7 350

I have some issues. Lets start with the history of this car. I acquired it after it had been sitting for about 3 years. I was started up and run about once a month during this time but not driven much. The engine and trans were rebuilt about 5,000 miles ago and run very strong. I just had all the fluids flushed, new radiator, throttle body sensor. She gets up and moves once it is running, no check engine light. Here are the issues that have been plaguing me for the last month.

Cold start in the morning, starts up like a dream. Let the car run for any amount of time and she will not turn back over, let sit for 10 min nothing, let sit for 45 nothing, about after an hour it will turn again. Starter cranks hard but will not turn before that. I know that this is bad, but if I spray some throttle body cleaner in the throttle body she will turn right over and run fine. Fuel pressure is ok, new starter. Plugs, wires, injectors have been in there sitting for 3 years (as mentioned above) but I do not think that has anything to do with the issue.

Next this happened to me today and made me decide to post. Car stopped running and couldn't crank over at all at a red light. Think its the alternator or battery but they checked out ok. So, I got a jump box started to crank, nothing, sprayed cleaner, turned over and at every light i had to put it into Neutral and rev the engine so It wouldn't die. Battery gauge on the dash was at 13. Noticed from the previous owner that the terminals are jerry rigged, might have something to do with getting power to the car. Bigger alternator, battery, and fix terminals????/

Let me know what else you guys need to help me out. Frustrated that she is being a bitch but love the damn car. First third gen.

Re: New to Thirdgen! Engine HELP, 88 Forumla 5.7

Think about this quote by Sherlock Holmes. "When you have ruled out all of the possiblities of suspects a.k.a. all the things you have checked on your car and replaced... you must start looking at the "appeared to be innocent" a.k.a. you thinking that it isn't your injectos.

This is exactly was happening to me. Ding Ding... This is what it could be... Its is your injectors. Let me give you the run down what had happened to me. (with bad injectors) Your injectors run nice when cold but when they are hot your car will want to stall coming to a slow stop, stop, red lights etc. Even run ruff. So what you are going to have to do is put it in neutral everytime you are coming to a stop, right? Or if worse anytime you are letting off the gas and going below 1500rpms you have to put it in neutral. If it does stall you have to put Ether in it... That will make it start EVERYTIME in the coldest weather, rainiest day, hottest day, you name it.

Trust me, that is the last thing that I wanted to replace... Injectors. I thought, never it can't be the injectors... So I got sucked into replace parts with new ones... wasting money (though new parts are always good). It's a pricy fix. But if you like doing things yourself... I can hook you up with a website that can get you some good injectors for cheap. I would say this to you bro... If you have about $300.00 and some tools. It's going to take a while if its your first time but it can be done. (I did it my first time like 2 months ago) It took a while, but if you just have some patience and time to do... Do it yourself. Trust me. Replace ALL 8 injectors

It's late and I can't really think right now... I have problems of my own... I'm tired. But I can definitely give you more advice and what I know from my problems... Just reply back to my message if it helps you.

Plus if the car has been sitting that long what could happen is the filters in the injectors tend to dry rot and restrict the flow. Could use a good cleaning/service or just replace them with Bosch injectors. There are a couple of good vendors on this site, It will just cost you a phone call.

Also recomended # for the fuel injectors? It is lightly modified with a larger 52 mm bbk throttle body, no cats, exhaust, headders, chip.

Of course. Any injector that sits for too long and needs cleaning but isn't getting the treatment could go bad...

I would advise just getting all of them replaced with new ones.

Test your fuel injectors. Should all ohm out to about the same. IT almost sounds like your Torque converter is stuck locked up causing it run like a 5 speed.

Re: New to Thirdgen! Engine HELP, 88 Forumla 5.7

All right after not being in town the entire month of May I was able to get under the hood. New Battery with Higher CA and did a switch of the IAC. Completely fixed the problem, no more carb cleaner needed to start her. New issue that is arising - Starts strong will open up with an Idle of 1000 then slowly drop to around 600 - 700 RPM's, is this normal for sitting? On the other hand if I start turning on the electronics (hit the windows, step on the break, lights, etc.) RPM's drop even lower to the point where if I hold down both windows at the same time I can get the engine to completely die. Then I'll turn it off and crank it up again no problem. What do you guys think it is? Alternator?

Havent pulled codes yet no time but when the engine is on no check light.
