Tech / General EngineIs your car making a strange sound or won't start? Thinking of adding power with a new combination? Need other technical information or engine specific advice? Don't see another board for your problem? Post it here!
Good afternoon! So I just tried this trick to look for codes. I am getting no flashing lights on dash but a clicking and buzz from around the egr (near the intake manifold) . ??????? Now when I start the car I get some smoke comimg from the egr location . Any thoughts??? Buy the way the key was only clicked forward when I did the test like its supposed to and I jumped out the top row two on the right.(5 & 6)

Make sure you're looking at the connector the right way up. It's terminals A and B and make sure you're actually contacting the pins. If you don't get flashing lights (at least 12s) when you turn the key to the ignition on position it may be a bad ecm. If you have the electronic egr unplug it and check it is closed. That to start with.
I jumped 5 and 6. I will have to try 6 and 12. If it turns out that 6 and 12 are the correct ones any one know whats I was controling jumping 5 and 6 ???? Like I said I was controling something on the intake manifold area

I jump A B and turn key to on. No code flash at all. Solid check engine light. Could it be a bad ground on D not allowing light to shut off? If I were to jump that to a ground to test?
Try another ground, ohm the white blk pin b of the aldl to pin a9 of he ecm assuming you have tpi.
if the wire is good and grounding the ecm doesn’t blink the mil the ecm might be defective.
Thank you. No TPI, it’s a q-jet. I’ll do some digging. Not sure how just changing oil would cause it. But it’s an old car. I just bought it and am trying to start with basic maintenance. It runs fine.

88 GTA would not originally be a q-jet. It would be a TPI car. So it's been modified and unlikely to yield anything useful from the ALDL.

88 GTA was the original poster's car back in 2011 , this present day question involves an 86 TA , so he may well have a factory carb car .
And thus illustrates the biggest issue with bumping old threads , it's all too easy for present day posters to loose track of whose car goes with whose question

I'm having the same issue. Can't pull codes and get a buzzing sound when I jump pin 5,6 or the A,B pin no flash code 12 light. Like it's not entering diagnostic mode. Did you resolve this issue? Thanks
There are no "5, 6" pins. The cavities on the ALDL connector are identified with alphabetic characters, A through M. The diagram shows the connector as viewed from the front, where the assembly line connector or scanner would be plugged in.
If you suspect a wiring problem, test the voltage at terminal B to a known good chassis ground with the ignition turned on. The ground connection at terminal A can also be verified with an ohmmeter to a know good chassis ground. If either are not connected the diagnostic mode will not occur.
If the +5VDC and good ground are present, it may help to disconnect the ECM from power for a period of several hours. This will erase all learned data tables but they will rebuild as the vehicle is operated for a few days. The easiest way to do this is to remove a battery cable or the 20A ECM/Fuel Pump fuse under the hood.
It may also be helpful to remove the connectors at the ECM, inspect and clean as necessary, and reseat them. Again, ECM power should be off for this.
