Recently, I noticed a rat run into the woods from my car(twice). I checked under hood, and he only chewed wires that I could tell, but when I started the car and turned on the ac, junk blew out of the vents at me. I checked the ac fan motor for rat nest, but was only a lil pinestraw. I vacuumed out the junk he left me around the fan that had become lodged in the space next to what I think is a core..I hooked it backup, and looked under the passenger side dash above the floor board. I noticed rat food and rat droppings on top of the foam. Could he be in the car? Could he/I have messed up something in the vents?


My main problem is only air comes out of the vents on top of the dash, and its blowing small debris out as well!

I've had problems with vents before, but now its completely positive that it only wants to blow out of the defrost on all settings. Any help on where I should start is much appreciated!!

 

Defrost is the default when there's a vacuum leak. That said, it's conceivable that the critter's nesting material is causing 'door' issues in the system.

How could I check to see if he was nested in the vents? Or how could I clean vents properly? (Without taking the entire dash apart lol)

 

I am not sure you can clean them out without tearing the das apart. But I agree with James C. I had the same problem with my car only blowing out of the defrosters up top and it was a vacuum leak that was cause it. I had to replace a little vac. canister looking thing right next to the distributor in back of the motor. fixed it right up! Good luck bro

 

I would have to say you probably have a vac leak. If I remember right your cruise control is vacuum controlled and this also shouldn't work.

 

If the air is comming out of the dash and is still blow hot\cold air even of different setting pull the switch board out from the console and check there should be 5-6 vaccum lines going into the back of it alot of times the switchboard on the back goes bad and causes that the rat could have eaten\chewed it and thus causing the problem

 

I may be mistaken but I don't think the hvac and cruise use the same vacuum line. My car has been hacked up though, they may share a hose if its all stock.

OP I agree with these guys its more than likely the vacuum hose is disconnected. Make sure its attached to the engine first, then work your way back toward the interior of the car to find where it broke.

 

My Parts and Illustration Cat. shows the vacuum tank as part of the cruise control. I could never find it as part of the HVAC.

I had this same problem on my wifes Beretta. She only had defrost. After finding the vacuum line that had a small cut in it, replaced it with a new section. It was broken right near the battery. After doing this repair, her cruise control started working again. This came in handy on the trips to California.

 

Yea I though the reservoir was somewhere in the dash for HVAC, but again, my car is not as the General built it back in the day (so sad too...).
