smoking

My car seems to smoke right around 2k rpms all the time no matter the speed. And even at idle some. It seems to be a blueish white smoke. Its done it on 2 different shortblocks. Am i just putting my intake gaskets on wrong or carb way too rich or what? Because it does burn ur eyes at idle. Its a 1992 firebird with a 79 350 with a lunati cam and iron eagle heads. New crank and bearings.

Re: smoking

ran it without the PCV valve to see if that was bad and it still smoked almost seemed worse but that could be just mind games.

When you say blueish white, the white part could indicate coolant leaking into the combustion chamber, What does the smoke smell like? How does your oil look?

Re: smoking

got the new intake gaskets on and it still smokes. Its mainly on deceleration and around 2k rpms. I did a leakdown test on the last shortblock and it passed on all cylinders. Im running straight water and when i drained it out to change the gaskets it was clean just like it went in. Im about half a quart low on oil so im stumped as to what it could be.

Re: smoking

ive tried no pcv valve and a new pcv valve and still smokes. If i pull the pcv valve out while running it will smoke out of that hole but if i plug both the pcv and breather valve there is no crankcase pressure.

It sounds like you have a ring problem.

I wish I could. My experience with valve seals is the engines smokes at start up, and for a little while after, but quits after driving around. My IROC smokes due to valve seals, but it goes away after using it. That's why I suspect you are having mild ring problems, but not too bad. I would like someone to chime in and enrich us both, cause I would like to know what your problem is also. I'm just making an educated guess.

Re: smoking

I know this motor situation has been through alot of changes:

What in it, is still the same it has always been? (hasn't been changed)

Eliminate EVERY PART you know FOR SURE has been changed out while it's had this issue.

To add to the little bit of logic in my sig, I'll quote Sir Arthur Conan Doyle; he has his most famous character say "when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth"; and of course, "Never theorize before you have data. Invariably, you end up twisting facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts."

Re: smoking

thats the thing it smoked on both shortblocks after i did the head, cam, intake, and carb swap. It ran fine after the swap for prob 10-20 miles then it started smoking and later it started knocking. Now on this shortblock everything same as the last It smokes around 2k rpms seems to be more on deceleration. But theres no knock or anything and great oil pressure. How do the plugs look to you guys? Im thinking of swapping out the valve seals and doing another compression and leak down test at the same time. What would be the best valve seals to use? It currently has umbrella seals.

Re: smoking

Well if you where running to rich of fuel it would come out black. I have a 305 tbi that i just rebuilt and it smokes white everytime i start it. Mine is def a ring problem, they weren't broken in properly but its a lesson learned lol. but yours sounds like either a ring problem or valve seals.

Re: smoking

If it runs good, and it's not smoking too bad then just drive it and don't worry. If it is bellowing out smoke and you are offending the guy behind you, then you need to address the issue which sounds like rings.

Are the valve seals fresh?

Did you over heat it? Cause that can make the valve seals brittle if you really over heat. I have heard of this happening.

Unless you know and trust the previous owner, I wouldn't go by what anybody said.
