87 Minimum air adjustment and IAC
87 Minimum air adjustment and IAC
Hi Guys,
With my iac unplugged and my engine idling the car idles around 1200. Is this way off? Shouldn't it be around 450 ?
Thanks for the help.

Re: 87 Minimum air adjustment and IAC
Update,
I can't seem to get my idle without the iac plugged in to fall below 1200 rpm in park to adjust the minimum. The plates are closed and the throttle adjust screw isn't even touching the throttle cable plate. What do you think it could be? Vacuum leak somewhere?
Thanks

Re: 87 Minimum air adjustment and IAC
anomolee, did you turn the ignition on and jump the A and B terminals? You must jumper the A and B terminals with ignition on for at least 30 seconds. Then go unplug the IAC. Take whatever you use to jumper A and B out and start the engine. You must do this to close the IAC fully before you make any adjustments. If it still idles that high after you do this, you could have a vacuum leak.
Re: 87 Minimum air adjustment and IAC
thanks, I will try again. Just to be clear, I remove the iac plug before remore my A B jumper ? Also, with the iac unplugged shouldn't the idle be lower than 1200? I can't get it to go lower than this and the throttle screw will not touch the throttle plate.

Re: 87 Minimum air adjustment and IAC
yeah remove the IAC before the A B jumper. With the IAC unplugged the idle should be very low, I would move that screw to where its at least touching, engine might not even idle. Also, do this adjustment with the engine at normal operating temperature.
Re: 87 Minimum air adjustment and IAC
Ok, left the paper clip in A and B, ignition on but not running, unplugged the iac, turned off the ignition, removed the paper clip, now the engine wont start. What should I look for? Do I nned to leave the paper clip in when starting the engine to make the adjustment, or should I take the paper clip out before starting the engine?
Thanks
Ok, I'm getting the engine to start and maybe barely stay running. I have to move the screw out quite a bit. Is this normal? When I plug in the iac is the car going to redline? What should I expect before taking it somewhere?
Thanks again

having a little trouble to get it to idle without the iac. Do I need to move the throttle screw out more until it idles? The screw seems to be out quite a bit.. Any thoughts?

Re: 87 Minimum air adjustment and IAC
Ok, if it wont start the throttle blades are closed too far. Move them out till it starts, then set the idle speed at about 400-450 RPM, shut the car off then plug the IAC back in. Car should not redline. Also take the paper clip out before starting it. After starting it give it about 30 seconds until it goes into "closed" loop. Then make the adjustment.
Re: 87 Minimum air adjustment and IAC
Ok, I've gone through the steps in the correct order but now after plugging in the iac and driving for a couple of minutes the car stalls at a stop sign. Why would this be?
Thanks for any help.

what RPM does it idle at with the IAC plugged in? might be set too low. Could be possible you have a bad IAC as well.
Re: 87 Minimum air adjustment and IAC
Hi,
Its throwing a code 33 and with the iac unplugged the idle is unsteady. Would you say that I'm not getting the steady idle because of the maf?

Re: 87 Minimum air adjustment and IAC
Minimun idle speed adjudtment:Ground diagnostic lead (a-b jumped)turn ignition on do not start engine wait at least 30 seconds, with ignition discinnect IAC electrical connector, disconnect set timming connector, start engine, remove ground and adjust idle at 400 rpm in neutral, is recomended to do this procedure when motor is closed loop, before start the procedure let it warm up and than you can start the procedure as is wrote.

Make sure your connector on your MAF is secure. Make sure the terminals are clean. I was getting this code and I ended up replacing the connector. Everytime i would wiggle the connector the car would run like crap and i would intermittently get this code. Replaced the connector and have not had a problem
Re: 87 Minimum air adjustment and IAC
Thanks for the reply. I will clean the connector a little better. The car runs good but right when I start it I get the code 33. Is it in limp mode?

Re: 87 Minimum air adjustment and IAC
Just throwing my 2¢ in, but isnt code 33 the MA P sensor (low vacuum) code? Idle problems combined with that code would indicate to me that there is a vacuum problem somewhere.

ThunderODB, the code is for high MAF or MAP. Depends on which one you have.

Re: 87 Minimum air adjustment and IAC
And he has an 87 IROC so it must be MAF unless he converted it to speed density
