Odometer problem

I have a 1989 Irocz and the odometer is just counting miles way to fast. I got it started and running last June after sitting 4 10years when i started it, it had 86,000 miles Ive only driven about 1,200 mile but the odometer reads a little over 90,000. The trip counter wont work either.
Does anybody know what the problem may be?

Also my rpm jumps from 1,000to1,500 when Iam stopped at a light and when im in park. It only happens after the engine has warmed up.

Please Help

Re: Odometer problem

my speedometer don't work in my 87 formula. i cut into the wires going out of the yellow box next to the computer straight up to the trans speedometer place to hook it up and it does the same thing as you. i went 1/4 of a mile and it said i went 15 miles. it was messed up. but my speedometer didn't even work just the trip counter. i am having a similar problem as you. just my speedometer dont work at all.

but on the tach it might be the wire getting hot. could be touching something like the head. i know my tach wire is right by the head. only because the people that had it before hacked all the wiring out cause they changed it to carb.

the guy at my local autozone said that it could be my speed out put sensor in the rear of the transmission thats causing the odometer to overcount

Re: Odometer problem

might be thats what i hooked straight up to the 2 wires comming out of the speed sensor box (the yellow box). and that made the odometer to count fast.

Re: Odometer problem

MyIroc, your speedo is mechanical. Neo, yours is electric. Different problems all together.

MyIroc, check the following link for more info about the trip odometer:

BTW, MyIroc, the VSS (vehicle speedo sensor) on your 89 is located on the back of the cluster.

Re: Odometer problem

hey man thanks for all the help. I finally took the time to fix it. The trip counter works now! I used a rubber band to fix it. LOL! but ill be able to tell later if it counts the miles right.
