Hood clearance and air cleaner questions/opinions

Here is my current setup:

I have a stock IROC hood, RPM Air-Gap, 1" phelonic spacer, Holley 650, drop base, 14x2" Summit filter, and a normal 14" top.

I'm wondering if adding Summit's open lid top (similar to the K&N X-Stream) would help me out. (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-239501/?rtype=10) I know that many of you may chew me out in the first place for using a 14x2 filter with a drop base, but it's what I've got room for. Now, I'm just hunting for some extra airflow. The car feels even better now with the addition of the spacer, and I haven't been to the track to veryify anything yet. Just wondering if that particular lid may get me a smidgen more airflow even with a stock hood. It really doesn't feel like the car is choking or anything, just anticipating it might be restricted some.

You could always go this route if you have the money but you would need a cowl hood unless you still ran the 2 inch and just used the top.Or think about a cold air kit.

Re: Hood clearance and air cleaner questions/opinions

Yeah, I was thinking about grabbing just the top, but the Summit brand. I'm convinced they are the same as the K&N, just cheaper (and the right color too since the filter is Summit's). Cold air kit - not right now, though I have toyed with the idea.

The stock hood has to stay. Trying to keep her somewhat sleeper'esque =P

Re: Hood clearance and air cleaner questions/opinions

I doubt it - it's gonna get dmashed into the hood and not allow any significant airflow.

But - another idea ...

I found that the drop base housings restrict air flow so much ... with a 3in filter I could only see about 3/4 in actual space for 'air to flow through', since the base drops so much. Thus, I went with a non-drop base housing, and ran a 2in filter like you - that way I get a full 2 inches of flow. With your 2 in filter on a drop base, I'm wondering if your getting any flow (worth mentioning)?

well one thing you need to know is. the extreme lids stick up a lil bit farther than the regular non flow lids. maybe 1/4 to 1/2 inch.

Re: Hood clearance and air cleaner questions/opinions

Thanks for the info about it being a little taller, I think it will still clear alright. Also, with the note about airflow, the engine feels the same as when I had a 14x3, even a little better now up on the top end with the spacer on it, so I really don't think airflow is hurt that much. I have the HP main body that has no choke tower, so air isn't getting cut off there.

I went ahead an purchased summits flow top series. Will post pics on Friday when it comes.

This is a useful bit of information. The other bit of information I have to offer is tha the flow-through top's have a flat surface. The typical Holly/Edelbrock chrom elid has a raised surface to clear the air horn and bowl vents. Since the flat top doesn't offer this clearance, you will definitely not make it with my setup with a choke tower and you also will need to shorten your bowl vents a bit to compensate.

I drilled 2 small holes in the flow-through top (ONLY through the metal grating below the filter material) to give the bowl vents a place to go, and shortened them marginally as well. The result is a lid that clears the stock hood perfectly. I also ran this setup at the track last weekend - the engine is not starved for air at all. It ran exactly the same with the filter off as it did with it on.

Glad it fit, very nice looking car and engine bay. Was that painted or is it the original paint?

The car has about 240,000 miles on the body, so it's been painted, haha. It was painted 74u Victory Red.
