How To Remove Starter From My 1987 Camaro.
Looked at all the other threads, still havent been able to pull the thing out. Its free floating and completely detached, just cant geometrically pull the thing out. Looking for detailed instructions and/or pictures or diagrams. Thanks for your help.

Do you have the long tube Hooker Super Comp Headers?? If you do you have to loosen it up. I can't get my starter out w/o loosening the passenger side header.

If you cant get it out then you remove whatever is in the way. Probably the y-pipe. I dont think taht should be necessary but if you cant get it out then you gotta remove something else to make it come out.

Sometimes you just need to walk away for a few minutes, hours, or days, and then it just works. Depending on your exhaust, it can take some acrobatics from the starter and you to get it to drop.
Remember that just because it looks like it 'should' go out rear first, doesn't mean that's the way it really does.

No luck as of yet. Almost considering dropping the exhaust even though I really dont want to.. I've got it basically vertical, nose out. theres a piece on the solenoid that wont clear the exhaust so I'm not really sure what to do.

If its anything like mine I had to twist and turn as i was dropping it. Real pain and i got a couple of bloody knuckles but it did eventually come out. Mine came out with the gear end up at like a 45 degree angle then tipping it some more as the back slid out

hold it in its original position move it forward while rotating it so that it goes as far forward as possible then bring forward while dropping nose downward and rotate to clear solenoid cover.
That's how I did it with the stock headers/starter. Now I have SLP headers and a mini starter, but I still use the same procedure.
Good luck.

You can always take teh solenoid off if theres enough room for you to reach in with a screwdriver style socket driver. Could probably even just take the two case screws out and pull it in pieces if you have to. Easier than having to try to get an old rusty exhaust apart or do something drastic like take the cross-member off.
More likely than not it can come out, but will take a lot of fiddling. I remember it being a pain with the stock exhaust and a full size starter as well.

Mine takes a bit of wiggling, jiggling, and cussing, but it usually comes out without having to remove anything..
Try that.

I got it out, I ended up dropping the control arm. It doesnt even come close to working. at all. Whats a good minature sized replacement? Thanks for your help!
Re: How To Remove Starter From My 1987 Camaro.
Hello 2011, I’m sure people that got it out easily weren’t replacing a stock unit! There is no way it will fit through that opening! I just removed the stock starter 89 TA 305 Auto 64k. I tried fighting with it, impossible, do yourself a favor and remove the solenoid, then it comes right out!
Was going to replace with the same unit but not after taking that one out. I’m thinking of going with a 90s LT1 or LT4 corvette starter.

I had to loosen the Y pipe on my SLP shorties to get it out. Now with the LT1 starter I won't have to do that again.

Unless as mentioned you have Hooker 2210 Long Tubes (or other long tubes as well likely).
To remove the start on my car, I have to remove both the passenger long tube and the starter simultaneously.
