Starter won't turn half the time--help asap

I've been having problems getting my 91 rs to start. All of a sudden last week the starter decided not to turn over some times. The car has a new battery and new alternator because those went our earlier. Now it has a new starter and new ignition switch and it is still being a pain. The security light doesn't stay on after the key is first turned and I've tested the clutch safety switch and that was ok. I can turn on the lights and the radio just the starter won't turn. When it does turn the car starts right up and runs fine.

If anyone can help me out with what to look for that would be awesome.

Most likely the engine is just near peak compression on an compression stroke and hte starter is weak. Fortunately since I have a manual what I would do is throw it in gear and get it rolling a little and pop the clutch to just barely move the engine enough to get it past "the hump". And it'd be fine...

Probably a weak starter or a bad connection though.

Mines a manual to. I can turn the key sometimes and it wont turn. Go back 10 minutes later and it will without rolling the car.

Have you checked the starter switch?
If worn and not making proper contact then output to starter solenoid could be intermittent

Roll it a foot or so and pop the clutch. Try to do it in normal engine rotation though, ie, if you're rolling forward, use a forward gear. See if it makes a difference.

At least since you have a manual you can always push start it! I had a friend who delivered pizzas push starting his car everywhere he went.

Clean the corrosion off your starter connections. Free repair that could solve your problem.

Does this happen even when the car has been sitting and the engine is cold, or only when the engine is hot?

It happens hot and cold. I'll try cleaning the connections and finding the starter switch. (Good thing I got the haynes manual for it)

So when you turn the key and the starter does nothing does it at least make a clicking noise. If so diff. a bad/loose connection somewhere.

Get a cheap ebay LT1 starter. Even if that doesnt fix your problem they're a huge upgrade.

If I didn't already get a new starter I would do that.

Re: Starter won't turn half the time--help asap

I cleaned off the leads to the starter with a wire brush and it started 4 times in a row. So hopefully that's solved. Now the brake lights aren't working so im going to get on that right now.
