Recommended Replacement Starter?

Not surprisingly, my starter is dead. Any recommended replacements? I was looking at this:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/NAL-12361146/

But I don't know if theres something you guys think would work out better. I definitely want a mini sized to make it easier to get back in the car. Thanks.

Re: Recommended Replacement Starter?

Can get the same "type" starter off ebay (no-name) for about $80 shipped. I got one 2 years agoi and haven't had any issues with it at all.

Re: Recommended Replacement Starter?

Just go to your local parts start and pick one up. I worked at Advance Auto for a while and the starts we sold/sell are fine. Life time warrenty on some, so if it craps out again just bring it back.

Re: Recommended Replacement Starter?

That one is fine, but a bit $$$$... it's a Hitachi motor like alot of the others.

I wouldn't go with any of the cheeeeeeeeeeep "ebay" knockoffs. Most of em are Chinese made "replica" pieces, not the real thing. Look for weasel wording like "designed to OEM specs", "xxxx style", "OE performance", "brand new" or "factory new" with prices less than you can get a rebuilt one at AZ for, etc. You end up with a one-use throwaway; no parts in the world will fit it unless you somehow know how to get in touch with the plant it was made in which is in like Shenzhen or Guangdong, so if it breaks, it's into the trash and into your wallet for another. Assuming it ever works in the first place and doesn't have some egregious and flagrant QC issue. Kindest I can be, is to call that a "crap shoot".

Best route might be to get a rebuilt for a 93-97 Camaro/Firebird V8 or 92-96 Vette.

Re: Recommended Replacement Starter?

The summit house brand ministarters work excellent, and are ~$120. The market for small, powerful starters for SBC's has been flooded with lots of selection, so I don't see a reason for paying $300 for a starter anymore, that's dealership pricing there.

I have had good luck with advanced auto also. Starters, alternators, radiators, no problems yet, although I question where they came from e.g. China, India, etc.

Re: Recommended Replacement Starter?

I have had 4 or 5 bad starters from Carquest in the last month I ordered the red mini starter from Ebay they offer a lifetime warranty. they actually have a phone number and are a real business $66 plus $9.50 shipping. I will put the starter in as soon as it shows up and let you know if it actually works. DONT BUY CARQUEST STARTERS. I have had 6 or 7 within 13 months every one acted a little different but ultimatly the all fail.

I've been running the above starter for 10 years now without any issues. It's been beat to death, covered in every fluid imaginable, and dropped on the ground several times. Still works flawlessly.

Re: Recommended Replacement Starter?

I bought a re- manufactured starter from Auto-Zone and wrapped it in one of these over three years ago. = http://www.thermotec.com/products/14...at-shield.html Not only dose the starter have a limited life-time warranty but since I started to rap them I have not had to use it.

Re: Recommended Replacement Starter?

I got my starter from GM and it cost more than this but this is what mine looks like. I have had it on my car 4 along time no probs. I also get them used from time to time.

This is what the starter sounds like.
