Performance 350?
Performance 350?
Ok so I have a 92 Camaro RS with a stock 305 and 700r4 auto trans...... I don't want to do a engine swap because that's the easy way out.... I want to just do some add on's, like heads, cam, lifters, headers, small things to add a little more power and wake my stock engine up some I'm hoping to get like 330 horsepower out of it after it's all said and done.... Had anyone every atempted what I'm about to and suceeded with a pretty fun ride? Or has everyone just junked the 305 and went with a 350? I hope to hear and maybe see some examples of what I want to do already done. Also the title was supposed to be performance 305
Re: Performance 350?
You'd be so much happier w/ a 350, you'd be much closer to your goals. I'd find a vortec 350 & freshen it up. That way you don't have to get new heads, just have them set up for higher lift cams.
Ever since they put efi on a 350, the 305 should have been discountinued, the fuel mileage is nearly the same & the power is better.

Re: Performance 350?
Yeah well I was considering putting a newer 5.3 in it out of a wrecked truck... but someone told me it would take alot of work and some cutting.... I just really want something different.. anyone can just put a ole 350 in it and be done but I want to surprise people when I lift the hood
Re: Performance 350?
TBI engines can support that power level, but not without some work. And it will come easier with a 350 than a 305. Since they're externally indentical nobody would know if you had installed a 350 (or a 383 or a 400!).
But to keep appearances 'stock' (keeping the TBI system) you have to go beyond just simple bolt-ons. You're talking the increase in displacement, plus heads and cam PLUS TUNING. Especially tuning. TBI systems don't run worth a damn on a modified engine without a good custom tune.

Re: Performance 350?
Well I really wanted to keep the 305 and just have a good road running car..... but I know it's going to be the cheaper route to just buy a 350 but I'd rather have a vortec 5.3 instead anyone know of someone with one in a 3rd gen camaro? I don't maybe it's cause a 350 is cheaper and more horsepower? All I know is I want to be able to drive it on the street without spending a fortune in gas.... ya'll know where I could find a cheap used motor... like a website to go to or something like that I know you can usually buy a pretty good motor out of a wrecked truck for like 600 to 800 dollars stock...... and it will come with the wiring harness and computer I think?

Well, honestly, if you are willing to do heads , cam etc. It is not that much harder to just pull the motor. I am sure you could do ok with a 305 though. Its up to you.

Re: Performance 350?
Dude, I am a 305 patriot. Even I even I have to admit that trying to mod a 305 that much isn't worth it. And engine swap is cheaper, more efficent, and in the end you'll have more power. Too get 330hp out of that thing your gonna have to tear that block appart, replace/upgrade everything and then stoke it to 335. Then you might have 330hp. Maybe. Also no one will can visually see the difference between a 350 and a 305 when you pop the hood. So as far as being different goes, your better off suprising people with a nice clean 350 under the hood instead of the 305. It's just not worth it.

Re: Performance 350?
Here's my path: My IROC began life with an anemic/gutless LG4 (155hp). I wanted something better, so my goal was to make the LG4 the equivalent of an L69 (190hp, IIRC). I swapped in a Summit cam and an Edelbrock intake. I tweaked the Qjet with performance hangers and rods and threw on an L69 dual snorkel set-up (I was lucky enough to buy the ducts and hoses new from GM) as well as a complete L69 exhaust exhaust: manifolds, Y-pipe, high-flow cat, and intermediate pipe. Results? Much, much nicer.
Next was the swap to a 350HO Deluxe (330hp). At this moment in time, I wonder why I ever bothered wasting time, energy and money messing with the LG4. Hindsight is 20/20, though, right?

Re: Performance 350?
330hp to the wheels out of a 305 all engine in neigh impossible. 330hp at the crank all engine has been done. chevy hipo did a write up on a 92 camaro that they reworked the 305tbi. they switched to vortec heads and shaved them down to bump compression outside of pump gas levels used a new high flow tb, and of course retuned the ecu. they made 257 to the rear wheels.....

from me, the only answer you will get is a $500 engine is a $500 engine and so on. If you go to a junkyard for an engine then you are getting a junkyard engine.
I'm from the school that if you are going through all the trouble of replacing an engine, don't toss in someone else' junk. Rebuild it prior to installing
As for whipping up on them stangs. I own a 3rd gen, 4th gen and 07 stang. You'll need a lot more than some ole truck 350 to beat my stang at the track.
Re: Performance 350?
I really don't know a price range just yet just shopping around for now.... I might just buy a 327 block from my brother and build it up.... it will be unique and run pretty good... it came out of a regal I think late 80's model.... it will be costly I know but unique that matters to me more than horsepower

Re: Performance 350?
If it came out of a regal it should be a olds 307 or a 305 chevy. A Vortec shortblock can still be bought for $1300 shipped (summit doesn't carry it anymore), you will need to call around to find one.

Re: Performance 350?
the short block doesnt determine whether its a vortec or not, the heads do....
Re: Performance 350?
Well Idk but it is a 327.... I'm on a new mission I think I'm about to purchase a 89 rs with a 383 stroker motor with about 600 horsepower for 2500..... or just the body and build a engine to put in it
