Re: Cam companies

Bullet cams
Howards cams
Comp cams
Oregon camshaft

The list can be endless. Depends what you want it for. Most have more than adequate off the shelf cams. Many can do custom grinds for your specific engine.

Just about, but not all, camshafts I've used have been a Comp Cams off the shelf grind. The last cam I got was a great grind for my combination of parts. Too bad it got damaged in my last engine failure. I'll probably buy the same grind again. I'm almost tempted to buy a custom grind from Bullet.

Re: Cam companies

383 street motor... Wanna get a few cams based on my setup and see which company's cams work better... Been researching cams and I'm hoping doin some testing will help me get a better understanding on how to go about cam selection... Seeing as I still don't know how to even get a cam in the BALL PARK area for any given motor. SO I'll get a few cams, run them on the dyno, get the results, compare from cam to cam and try to figure out why one cams results were "X" and the other cams results were "Y" and "Z". Hopefully then I'll get a better understand WHY and HOW things work. Thanks for the suggestions.

Re: Cam companies

Phone Erson and ask for John or Eric
Phone Bullet and ask for Mark

If these guys can't get you a perfect cam grind, you're not telling them the correct information.

Re: Cam companies

I think the Custom bullet I have now would work well if the shop that built the bottom end had actually ended up with the compression they said it was supposed to be, then I wouldn't be here asking... I briefly spoke with bullet, can't remember who, but when I told them what parts I ended up with from the shop they said they woulda ground a different cam... So it seems the shop dropped the ball... Either that or the builder can perform some type of magic voodoo.

Re: Cam companies

You can have 3 different cam companies give you similar grinds and although they'll all be close in performance, they'll all perform a little differently. You can even have cams with identical lift, duration, LSA but because ramp profiles are different, they'll perform a little differently.

Bullet even offers different ramp profiles. The ramp that opens the valve is different than the one that allows the valve to close. A softer closing valve is easier on seats and less likely to float. Little things like that can make a similar spec cam very different from another.

The majority of the time, throw a cam in that's close to what you want and run it. Tweaking numbers slightly here and there will not make a huge difference to justify the cost of all the custom cam grinds. You're better off buying dyno time with someone who has a good selection of test cams and swapping them until you find one you're happy with.

Yes, I'll agree with that. But obviously if they all choose something relatively identical to each other there must be somewhat of a common factor, right? Just curious what you think.

That's true, hence very confusing. How good is your understanding with cams? Would you pick a cam based on DCR (IVC)/ cranking compression/ running compression? The only was I could see getting anywhere close to a ballpark choice is using IVC, that in turn gives me an idea of cranking/running compression. That's the best way I know how to select a cam... On my own at least.

Nobody like Lunati? They (Harold B.) design some great profiles and the gentle closing ramp is sure a plus for the valve seats.
