Code 45- Rich exaust - And comp. information

Today I hooked up a Solus Pro computer to my 1989 305 TBI. It showed a code 45- Rich exaust. I also got this information. I thought maybe someone would know what it is, and would guide me in the right direction toward fixing this code.

Is the check engine light on? Is the o2 sensor reasonably new? If not I'd replace it, clear the code and start there. Very little to see in the list, it shows the car is cold and operating in open loop, thus operating on preset values and ignoring sensor feedback. I'm also guessing it's not running, either that or it isn't charging, by looking at the batt voltageA snapshot of it warm and in closed loop may help a tad more, tho all the o2 reading will say is rich/clean and switch back n forth assuming it's working properly.

The check engine light is not on... I do have a fairly new o2 sensor in. I will clear the codes and heat up the engine the next time I hook up the computer. Thanks. There is a really bad exhaust smell when hot.

Re: Code 45- Rich exaust - And comp. information

Probably need to get it hot, on the highway cruising, do a scan in closed loop. Need to see block learn, integrator, O2 sens voltage, cross counts. Could be something simple like a bad control valve in the canister purge sys. that is pulling fuel vapors from the gas tank. Used to be common in the early 80s, not so much in 89 though.

As soon as I get the chance I'll do that, and post the readings. A few months ago I posted a thread about some disconnected hoses leading from the ball mounted under the evap canaster. Could this be related?... I still don't know where theseare suppose to lead to. Or two broken hoses behind the trans. Dip stick

the ball you are refering to is a vaccum canister for your cruise control. The ones behind the trans dipstick are most likely hvac and the vac supply for your cruise... a pic would help.

Re: Code 45- Rich exaust - And comp. information

I drove the car and heated it up to 240... and since i have a 180 thermostat it dropped to just about 180. This is the reading the computer got. I have not had the chance to upload the pictures of the disconnected hoses but i'll see if i can post the link to the thread.

Does it always run that cool? You should switch to a higher opening temp thermo if it does, it isn't getting warm enough to enter closed loop. Since you already know you have some vaccum leaks start with fixing them. Unmetered air will throw off your a/f ratio significantly depending how large of a leak you have.

78 degrees C is plenty to let the ECM go closed loop. Something else is keeping it from doing so.

The IAT seems rather high, on the other hand. Do you have an open element air cleaner?

Re: Code 45- Rich exaust - And comp. information

I have a air filter system off of a 1993 caprice tbi. I put a new Murray failsaffe thermostat 195. Car sat running and drove it on highway about 2 miles and it went to 240 then dropped to 190... 3 miles later it went up to 260 then went back down to 195-200. It stayed that way until I got home. 10 miles. It scared the **** out of me when my iequus gauge hit 260. I also disconnected the battery to clear the code. Tommorrow ill hook up thecomputer.

I heard that a 180 degree thermostat would work fine though. ???
